I could do Homer lining up before the snap with his hands dangling.one foot in front of the other on the line of scrimmage He was a track star at Tex So and beat Bob Hayes in track Not sure how the Giants acquired him but he was a home run hitter with his amazing speed and catches. Years ago my wife who is from East Texas was driving somewhere to see her relatives We went through Pittsburg, Texas and I told her there had to be a billboard or something saying " home of Homer Jones " But there was none.
My freshman year my roommate and I went to the cotton bowl to see the Giants play the Cowboys. My roommate on his bed sheet spray painted on it " Dallas 4-0 and then along came Jones" He just texted me and he still has that sheet on his wall in Conneticutt . We had " hi CBS " on it but it was never shown Everyone around us didn't get what we painted on it. Homer was 93 and died in Pittsberg Texas today He was also the 1st player to spike the ball The NFL put a fine for throwing a touchdown ball in the stands so Homer spliked and and it got a huge reaction So he did all the time.
I'm not sure how many touchdowns he scored for the Giants but he was one of my 1st superstars growing up I can't imitate you because we don't do that anymore and I have no one who would understand what the hell I'm doing. All I know is that nobody ever caught you from behind as #45 crossed that end zone. And although many years have passed you did the 100 in 9.3 seconds and that is why once you got started no one ever caught you. RIP Homer and thanks for those memories ..
