Best player without a PGA Tour title? Overton likes Honda setup
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. ? Jeff Overton arrived for the Honda Classic this week with good vibes.
The man who may be the best player without a PGA Tour title stirred some good memories driving through the entrance of PGA National. This is where Overton won the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship 10 years ago. Overton and his father drove from the family?s Evansville, Ind., home to play his senior year.
?It was the only national junior golf tournament I won,? Overton said.
Overton is making his 140th PGA Tour start this week. He enjoyed a torrid run last year where he recorded three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes in a 10-tournament run in the middle of the season, a streak that helped him make the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He?s looking to heat up after a sluggish West Coast swing, where he made the cut in all four stroke-play starts but recorded his best finish in a tie for 20th at the Sony Open.
?For whatever reason, I?ve never played well on the West Coast,? Overton, 27, said. ?I always thought it was because I take time off in the winter. But this year, I really didn?t take much time off. I thought my game was pretty good, so maybe it?s just that I don?t putt well on poa annua grass or desert-like greens. I really like Bermuda. I?m comfortable on it, and I?m just really looking forward to this tournament starting.?
Overton?s best West Coast finish in six seasons on the PGA Tour is a tie for 19th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am four years ago. He tied for ninth at the Honda Classic two years ago.
