For those (especially bars) who can't operate at all during this, most have laid off all of their staff and will basically look to start from scratch whenever they have the go-ahead. That's obviously extremely disruptive, but - other than rent, lowered utilities, and insurance - also means they aren't hemorrhaging cash anymore. So it will depend on what the owners have in the coffers to weather the storm. I suspect that most profitable businesses will find a way to get open again. If you were just scraping by though - yeah you're probably done.

I think the bigger loss is going to be with the Retailpocalypse. So many chains were already struggling mightily and this is just going to fininsh them off. I have a buddy who is general counsel for a company that is the landlord for a ton of commercial real estate and he was just rattling off big names that are all but certain to be gone for good. Basically if you didn't already have a strong presence in online ordering - you were already on the ropes and now you're done.

At least 50% will be gone if not more. If you ever wanted to open a restaurant this would be the time--well two or three months from now. Leases dirt cheap.

Above the Clouds....
Depends on where you are and how loyal were your clientele. Most of the restaurants around here are small and have a loyal following. I don't see many closings at all.

I always have wanted to own and operate my own business.........NOW, no way in hell would I want to be a small business owner. No one gives a shit while these family ran businesses are getting destroyed by the Politics of the world today. It's Sad, all Large companies were small businesses at one point, we are killing our future growth.

Yeah JC Penny's is toast. As for food places here in Ventura/Oxnard I really don't know. A restaurant like Texas de Brazil doesn't do takeout so not sure how that will end but they are a chain so perhaps they can weather the storm. Those independent places are the ones that will be screwed unless people are like it was said, loyal.
