How much does it cost to repair/replace a muffler?

Disclaimer: I dont know shit about cars. I have taken the Metro to work for 6 years, have a mint condition 96 Jetta with 24K miles on it that up until now has never needed anything more than an oil change.

But my muffler, I think, finally melted down. However the noise is actually eminating from the pipe a couple feet more towards the front of the car from the muffler. Does that sound like a hole in the muffler? Assuming you can speculate as to a couple ides of what it might be, any idea what something like that might cost to fix at my local Goodyear garage.

200-300 bucks . Depends on if it needs a new catalytic converter also. Goodyear can fix it with no trouble.

What if it needs a new CC?

Will it pass inspection without one? Im jammed up only because I need to get it fixed and inspected in the next 12 days.

Not sure of the inspection laws up there. Bad CC add another 78.00 dollars.

sounds like it could be a break in the pipe before reaching the muffler. Like a small hole in the pipe, or more probably a crack in it somewhere along the line. Had a recent problem in my old dodge... went over a speed bump and split the exhaust pipe in half when it dragged across. LOUD!!!!!!
Get a brazing rod and you can patch that puppy right on up.

If you want to try to find the leak and do it yourself, start the car and crawl under it and hold your hand around (NOT on) the pipe and feel for the exhaust leak.
then patch it. they sell fix it kits in parts stores for this very problem for around $9-10 bucks.

hey marine its sure to pass inspection then. I could drag my welding leads under it and weld it up in no time flat . I would charge more than 9 bucks though.

Granted, never thought about an emissions test... used to own a 71 Charger... emissions test on that thing were a joke. I had two flowmasters on it too...
Took it in for a state safety inspection a few months back and the guy refused to pass me claiming I had "glass packs" and cherry bombs under the car.... as if... :nono:

Kinda keep forgetting newer cars you have to actually save the environment with them...

It's kinda funny, I sold off the Charger two weeks ago and I haven't seen hide nor hair of those EPA bastards around my yard lately.

Final cost at my local Goodyear garage just over $400 for all parts and labor. Everything up to the CC was rusted, which I guess, after 6 years isnt unreasonable. And hell this car has been so good to me, this is the first time in 6 years I have ever had to spend money on anything other than oil changes.

Just seems like a lot of dough for some parts, pipes, clamps and labor. Oh well, these guys have done right by me for 6 years.
