This isn't for me...

One close relative of mine has goten hooked to online poker; i warned her it's a no win situation, but she keeps playing hoping to get back what she already lost.

I would like to prove to her it's a scam but don't have the arguments ( i never played, and don't intend to).

Can anybody point me to an online source, or past stories of players showing where she's heading to ?

I now 60 minutes(Maybe it was Dateline)did a piece a few months ago about how there were certain players in certain games that are placed there and they have the ability to see players cards and know when to play and when to get out.

Google search and you can probably find that story. I am sure they are only in higher stake games.

prolly only that will get her to quit is to really hit rock bottom, maybe bankruptcy... maybe have to steal from relatives..

we humans are weak

maybe scare her that she's just playing against computer bots that will never lose in the long run

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6002298/

Well, she can't afford to lose everything; she owns nothing and pays rent, and is 70.

I read your article, but it kind of legitimises online poker as the suspected bots aren't connected to the site's owner.

I believe online poker to be a gigantic scam where no hold is pulled by the owners when it comes to fleece their customers.

You might try explaining how players at different locations are in collusion and manipulating the game. You get 3-4-5 guys all in the same game all communicating by cell phone telling one another their cards, thereby totally overwhelming the legit players who are on their own. You can actually demonstate this if you want to go through the trouble.

I know a couple of guys who used to do this as they would pool together money and each enter with same amount and would divide money when finished.
They used instant message chat room to tell each other there hands everytime thus giving the threesome a huge edge over the other 3 or 4 in the room. He said they killed when it was those numbers in the room. Anything higher and odds were not as good but payoffs were bigger.

Thanks a lot frank :00x15
Here's something you can demonstrate even to the most impermeable mind.
I hope i convince her, she just spends days and nights in front of the computer screen.

Is she hooked on the game or the money?

If she is hooked on the game then just send her to partypoker and play with fake money.
Enjoyable for those wanting a game without risk.
Good practice. Maybe she should play that one and see how she does without risk of cash.

I'm afraid that's how she started, by playing with fake money.

These people are clever; they let you win while at it, then when it's for real money, things change.

The problem is she got introduced by one of her friends to it, and now believes somehow she can beat the machine, but it takes time to learn the game, so the losses are "acceptable".

It's crazy.
