First off when I amon the net and click on a button it sometimes takes 2 minutes to respond. So then I tried to defrag. Then I got a messsage stating a error. SO the I tried to scan disk for error and have it correctes. It scaned for about 10 seconds and then told me I did not have enouh memory to run that function. Even thought I had every program shut down. SO then I put in a startup disk and tried to scan that way. Well it was scanning fine until it found a error in the Dierctory. So I had it correct it. Now it is just stuck on 40%. What can I do???? I am at my wits end.

there r some utilites that may help, when i get to my wits end on issues like this, i simply back up everything that i have on disk and then re-format my hard drive and reinstall everthing.

But b4 u go to those extremes make sure u have all the software u need to reinstall and double check and the files u backup to make sure they r there.

And remember it takes time to reformat a harddrive and to reinstall windows and all the software, plan on a few hours.

If after that u still have problems then u will need to buy a new harddrive.

Try to re run set-up. Have a cd rom of your operating system handy...win 98, win me.. whatever. If this works it will be better than doing a total re format.

Hope this helps. I did this recently to two of my computers. I overlaid windows millenium over windows 98. This solved my problem which was very similar to yours.

Good luck

this may help:

1. shut down your computer
2. power your comp on & run it in "safe mode"
3. shut down comp (power it off, don't just restart)
4. power comp back on.

Running in safe mode is a good idea. It will cause your system to slow down while running defrag because most of the time, disk caching is turned off in safe mode, but it's still a good idea.

The main thing is to make sure your valuables are backed up before you proceed. It is possible to completely crap out your system running defrag if there is a serious disk problem.

If I were you I would check for viruses first however, you may have caught a little flu.

BTW, I do this kind of stuff for a living.

A couple of questions:

What kind of connection do you have to the internet? What speed? Who is your internet provider?

What site(s) are you trying to visit when you experience these slowdown problems?

If you're ru8nning put of memory trrrying to run scandisk, you should close some or most of the open programs before starting the scandisk. Try ctrl+alt+del(once) and close the open programs and do scandisk.
Your prob sounds like you have an issue w/ system resources. To check :
right click on the my comuter icon and go to properties.
click on performance tab.
if its less then %60, I'll suggest :
start > RUN > type MSCONFIG
click on the start-up tab and uncheck the progs that you don't need to run all the time.

Slow connection prob might be related to many things. Check the size of the temp internet files folder and make sure it's not excessively large. (windows default is 63MB)

Hope it helps.

Goldy,

What version of Windows are you currently
using?
If you have Windows ME you can eliminate
a lot of software issues by running
System Restore
You can find this feature by going to
Accessories
then System Tools.
It will guide you the rest of the way.
Set the calendar back several weeks beyond
any recent software downloads.
This will narrow down the possibilities.
As stated above the problem could be your
connection but it sounds like you have other
problems anyway.
If your running an older version of Windows,
the safemode will at least allow you to
boot up and make changes.
When you say your running at 40% it could
also be a partition issue with the hard drive
so don't run out yet and purchase a new drive
to fix the problem.
If you are still having problems and you are
able to see this post, repost and describe
your machine and what version OS you are
running.
I'll try to respond with some help.
The rest of these folks may have some tips
as well. Best of luck!

Well so far I closed out a few programs and now I have it up to 80% It seems that there is a file with a error that is causing scan disk not to work. Oh by the way I am using Windows 98

One last thing when I clink on links it responds right away. When I click onbuttons such as "Submit Reply" It can take many minutes. I have a local ISP which runs @ 49,000 bps

If the slowdown you are experiencing comes when you are trying to post replies, etc, it may simply be due to an overloaded or slow server on the other end. I have had these same problems myself on certain sites, and a couple of times it has happened here at MadJacks. On the other hand, if you have one file that is causing scandisk to hang up, that's different. Again, I would try to run this utility in safe mode.

Make sure you have do a full virus scan with a commercial virus protection software. While some of the problems *could* be server load or chalked up to "net" problems, on the whole it sounds like a virus.

Goldy,

Your right. It doesn't sound like a virus
problem. If it was, it would have reeked
a lot more havoc.

You say you closed out a couple of programs
and got it back to 80%? I'm guessing you
have deleted some software you downloaded
recently. I think your on the right track.

I'll share a problem I had a couple of months
ago. I downloaded off the net a shareware
blackjack game, used it a few times and forgot about it. Not soon after, I started
having a problem where I would sign on for
a few minutes and lose the connection. This
would continue sporatically through out my
time on the net and had me blaming the problem on the ISP, server and phone company.

I am running Windows ME and used the restore
feature I described above. After that my
problem disappeared.

So, think hard about what you may have added
recently and delete it. You can always go back and add it in later if its not the culprit.

This may not clear up the problem entirely.
It sounds like whatever it is,is conflicting
with something scandisk requires to run.
Alas, it could have corrupted the boot record
and reformatting will be the way to go.

Do that as a last resort though. It a real
nuisance to have to spend an entire day
saving data, reformatting and then reloading.

If you make some more progress, or you can
give me a more specific error you have encountered, I can pass it on to my kid
brother. He's an ace when it comes to these
kind of issues. I'll send him a description
of your problem and see if he has a suggestion for a possible cure.

Keep pluggin, help is only a post away!
