Not to go off on a tangent here, but the "self-driving" car concept drives me nuts.

This is all just hype and marketing guff.

There is no such thing as a self-driving car. There might be one day, but almost certainly not in our lifetimes (I'm old).

The current technology can't even account for wind or potholes properly. There are other massive problems that have no obvious current solution....for instance, all "self-driven" cars must be programmed to obey all local traffic laws, obviously. But, you don't do you? You don't come to a full stop when you come to a stop sign if the way is clear and no other vehicles are around (the old rolling stop). This presents serious logistical problems for the self-driving cars when they have to obey all traffic laws.

Lot's of other problems currently being worked on but not imminently solvable....sun glare, severe cold, speed limitations, extreme weather, etc.

Turns out that mimicking a human driving a car (something almost all sentient adult human beings can do) is not very easy after all. For some reason I'm quite pleased about that.

As the ad here hints at, there is a person in the car because in no state is it legal to not have a licensed driver in a publicly operated vehicle and both federal and state laws do not permit this. There is no pending legislation in any state legislature or federal government agency to change this....PA and AZ dropped their proposals before they were even fully written.

It's decades away, if ever.

OTOH, self driving cars can see in 360 degrees at all times, can help avoid crashes through technology and don't lose focus on the road while texting a friend, don't take to the road under the influence and likely aren't ignorant assholes like so many on the road that cause so many accidents today.

As for weather, well, that currently causes problems for humans too so that's a push, at best.

I do think they can be programmed to obey all traffic laws and I fail to see how that's a problem. It should only serve to make the roads safer.

I'm looking forward to this happening sooner than later.

So, if there is a human in the car that doesn't count as a self-driving car? I understand what you're trying to say but the technology is here even if the laws aren't. In Columbus OH, they have self driving shuttles getting ready to kick off pretty soon. There will be a human attendant in the shuttle, but the thing is supposed to be driving itself. Days away, not decades.
