Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
For immediate release
ATTENTION:
Camping season is approaching in Wisconsin, and this notice is being posted to
inform all people planing outdoor activities in the northeastern part of the state,
to be aware of bear activity.
In light of the rising frequency of human/bear confrontations in the wooded
areas of that region, the DNR is advising hunters, fishermen, and hikers to take
extra precautions, and be alert while in the field.
?We advise outdoorsmen to wear small bells on their clothing so as to not startle
bears that are not expecting them, and to carry pepper spray with them in case
of an encounter.?
It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen
should recognize the difference between Black bear and Grizzly bear droppings.
Black bear droppings are smaller, and contain lots of berries and fur, while
Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in them, and smell strongly of pepper.
