Hayes: 'I'm playing'
Jarivs Hayes back in Bulldog lineup
Jim Harrick will have his full complement of Hayeses tonight against Minnesota.
Jarvis Hayes missed three games after spraining the medial collateral ligament in his right knee on Nov. 24.
''I'm playing,'' Hayes said. ''Everything's cool. I'm ready to go. It's just like my first game. I'm jumping around like a kid in a candy store.''
His brother, Jonas, said that he should be able to play more than he did in the Bulldogs' loss to Georgia State on Tuesday. Jonas played just 12 minutes against the Panthers and had no points or rebounds. Colorado center David Harrison stepped on Hayes' ankle in the Bulldogs' Dec. 1 victory.
''Harrison came slap down on it,'' Hayes said. ''I didn't really feel it during the Colorado game because I was so into the game, but against Georgia State I couldn't play like I wanted to.''
Jarvis Hayes missed the Bulldogs' wins over Samford and Colorado, and the loss to Georgia State.
Hayes averaged 15.7 points in the Bulldogs' first three games.
''He brings so much to the table, not only scoring, but defense and rebounding and size and quickness -- things that you really miss,'' Harrick said.
Harrick said that he had waited to see how Jarvis Hayes practiced Wednesday before he decided to put him back in the starting lineup. He also said that he didn't have any trepidation about Hayes playing so soon after the injury.
''I thought he practiced strong and hard (Wednesday) with no ill effects, and with that in mind, we'll go ahead and start him,'' Harrick said.
Hayes' return will also help the rest of the team. Georgia has little depth, and with Hayes gone, defenses keyed on leading scorer Ezra Williams.
Williams is averaging 21.5 points per game. But he averaged 23.7 in three games with Hayes and 19.3 in the three without Hayes.
''(With Hayes back) you can't choke (Williams), like they have been doing,'' Harrick said. ''(Hayes and Williams) like to play with each other, they look for each other and I think that's really good.''
But some players have been able to increase their scoring without Hayes in the lineup. Rashad Wright, Mike Patrick and Chris Daniels all notched career-highs in points Tuesday against Georgia State, and Steven Thomas tied his.
''Any time you lose a key player, it's going to affect your team. But we battled all the way,'' said Wright, who also had four assists, three steals and no turnovers against the Panthers. ''We all had to pull together because we lost a key player. It's going to help us in the long run.''
