I think this will obviously end up in the political forum or dumpster, but I found this fact simply amazing:

Japan has very strict gun control laws, and in a land of 127 million people, there were six gun-related deaths last year.

I don't know how those in the gun rights could possibly argue this point. 6 gun deaths out of 127 million people!!! That's incredible.

While I like owning 2 guns with about 80 rounds of hollow point and I think I have 8 tracers left, I would easily trade my right to own guns and ammo for the life of a single child.

My mindset is, I would vote for a law to ban guns and ammo, but I won't be a hippie and give up my side arms while everyone else runs around cocked and loaded.

exactly...saint is smarter than this...I think...

joker...you should certainly give up your guns voluntarily as a humanitarian gesture...but,whether you give them up voluntarily or the gov`t confiscates them, that doesn`t necessarily mean that criminals will be disarmed...feel free to roll the dice...

This argument is invalid.

Arguing about gun control while using other countries stats is idiotic. It's much like arguing about our healthcare system and then bringing up other countries. Nothing about it is apples to apples. Look at the causes of gun problems. I haven't looked but I'm willing to bet that Japan has a lower % of their population that deals with mental disorders. I'm almost positive the US is one of the highest. So instead of taking away guns let's work on the real issue.(wow, doesn't this sound just like healthcare. Hey the prices are too high, let's make everyone have to have insurance. It doesn't fix the F'ing problem)

If someone feels threatened here then go somewhere like Japan where 90% of the people feel like they're well off and middle classed. Their pace of life is slower. Their family structures are tighter than ours. I could go on and on.

PS this is coming from someone who doesn't own a gun and has only shot one once in my life.

Why would different countries have different rates of mental problems?

It would seem foolish to discount cultural variables when comparing gun crime rates between countries. But, it would seem equally as foolish to discount the correlation between gun restrictions and gun violence rates in countries across the globe

Are you being serious?

Yup I think I am? Why would Americans be so much crazier than people from other countries? (I'm not even sure that's true, but if it is maybe it is due to more diagnosis?)
Surely Japan has it's share, considering it pretty much leads the world in suicide, which kinda sorta seems like a symptom of mental illness.

Don't get me wrong, there are some cultural differences in play. 6 gun deaths out of that many people is much more than a cultural difference. gardenweasel is smarter than this...I think...

And as I said, this wasn't my commentary on gun control. I just found the statistic to be incredible.

Azerbaijan and Zimbabwe are top 10 for least gun deaths...and we all know they have really similar cultures in comparison with Japan.

I found nothing that showed Japan had the highest suicide rate. I do know in Japan they have an extremely high % of their suicides in males compared to females. Cultures bring about different things in different places so I'll let you figure that part out.
