Stayed at the Nugget on one of my last times out there. Was not too impressed with it really. Nice rooms, and they had first class service. The people at the sportsbook were rude though and I was surprised they let some of the bums off the street in there to gamble and drink. Fremont Street experience was okay, nice little shops but I like the strip a hell of a lot better. One thing about the golden nugget that was great is their restaurants - first tier for quality prices. Stefano's and Zax were top notch and you won't pay out your nose like some places on the strip. They have a good coffee shop there as well. The city bus was the way to go to get to the strip and it can be a pain in the ass, but its better than taking cabs back and forth. If you're going to be downtown the GN is the best hotel/casino to go to down there. The pool is nice too. I probably wouldn't stay down there again because I like the strip better though. Have fun!!

line shopping!

line shopping!

Best part about staying downtown is you can shop sportsbetting lines very easily. Places are just a little stroll from each other, not huge distances like on the strip. The Las Vegas Club is the only place in NV that offers a 2 1/2 runline in baseball.

for GN, your choice is South or North Tower...North has nicest rooms, and closest to the action---the elevator is just steps from the casino or drive-up entrance (find that on the strip!) but rooms cost a bit more.

South Tower rooms, if you get a south facing one high up, have a very nice view of the Strip. But it is a little stroll from South Tower to the casino (not as bad as most Strip places tho).

that Carson St Cafe is one of the the best deals for the money downtown.

Downtown is more blue-collar than the strip, and has better gaming (not as tight machines, more BJ without 6:5, etc) and lower minimums.

Check out the "Golden Arm" display at the California Casino of the famous dice throwers that have played there....The bathroom by brewpub in Main Street Station Casino has a section of the Berlin Wall with the urinals set into it!

GN is owned by a pair of investors (made their money with an internet travel site) for the last year, and just announced they are selling it to Landry's Restaurants for many millions in profits.

be wary of any recommendations from kniefl- I believe he splurged on the missus last time in Vegas at Casino Royale.
