You may have heard a few months back that there was a proposed legisation to ban Internet Gambling in Australia. Basically this occured as the government felt Internet Gambling was linked to some of the social problems affecting this country.

Many sectors of the community managed to convince our politicians that there was a huge difference between Internet wagering (sports/racing) and Internet gaming (casinos). It was also hard to fathom that they had no concerns with someone picking up a phone to place a bet but they were very worried about someone using the exact same phone line to do it via a computer.

The final outcome was that Internet Gambling was allowed to stay but "in the run" Internet Gambling was banned which took effect this week.

Basically this means that once a tournament has teed off on Thursday an Australian resident can't place a bet on that event with an Australian book via the Internet. You must phone the book to place a bet. This impacts all Golf betting options:

Tournament winner
Tournament matchups
18 hole matchups
Group betting etc

There is nothing stopping an Australian resident placing a bet via the Internet with an offshore book or even the NZ Tab. There is also nothing wrong with an overseas client placing a bet via the Internet with an Australian book.

To me the whole matter is quite ridiculous. Any other thoughts on this ????
