I am having a problem getting on the Internet with my wifes laptop. Have been on the phone with Verizon all day.
The laptop is connected to my network but has local access only. I cannot get it on the Internet.
Any ideas? Another laptop in the same room is not having the problem.
The laptop in question has been on the Internet before but has not been used for a few days. Now it says local access only. Driving me and the Verizon tech crazy. Any help would be appeciated.

i had similar problems a while back, i solved them by unplugging the modem and/or router and turnimg off the laptop. simultaneously plug everything back in and turn on the laptop.

i`ve had to do this every time i`ve gone from router to direct cable connection for some reason but at least it`s worked. bol with your`s man.

also other times a laptop couldn`t connect due to the wireless receiver being accidentally turned off... most laptops have a switch or button that kills wireless connecting unless it is in the ``on`` position... because it usually is always there it is easy not be be paying attentin and it somehow having been turned off.

True, but the connection is on.

Skimmed through your post but go to command prompt type:

ipconfig /release
then after that is finished
ipconfig /renew

Are you able to ping a website on the command prompt? try typing "ping www.yahoo.com"

I cannot release ip and I cannot ping.

Maybe you need to hold the laptop over your head for good elevation.:142smilie

Did you try and reinstall the wireless drivers for the laptop in question. I have had lap wireless connection issues before and reinstalling the dell wireless driver fixed the issue.

Good luck

That was the first thing I thought of!

Yes, I have reinstalled the drivers multiple times.

Sounds like you don't have admin rights. Right click on the cmd.exe and "Run as Administrator"

So you have no issues when you connect the laptop direct into modem(local) then correct.

What brand laptop is it? Have you done google searches to find a forum for possible similar issues?

I did not understand. I thought because I was the admin it was the same thing. I did as you said and I was able to release the ip. When I renewed it became the same ip and I cannot ping.

What does it say when you try to ping

Success, for now anyway. After trying everything else and with the help from you guys here
i noticed everytime I released the IP it came back as the same one. I tried to type in a static IP and it seems to be working. I do not know what will happen when I reboot but for now she is connected and can stay off of mine. Once again thanks to everyone.
