I have high speed cable internet that comes into the house to a modem from the cable company and is then wired to my router which is an Apple AirPort Time Capsule and that feeds everything in the house.

When I run a speed test through my laptop it tests at 175mbps up to 200mbps at times, but never lower than 175. The test on my DirecTv shows it's plenty fast enough to stream movies at 4K, but when we do it lags and buffers quite a bit.

When my son downloads something on his Xbox it downloads at 30mbps??

What's wrong with my setup that things aren't smoother?

I can help.

Your router might be setting devices on a priority tier. Meaning, XBOX is on the lowest tier (which is default in many cases). You would have to set the XBOX to be priority one. (this is what I did).

Also, maybe a tier isn't the problem. It could be a firmware upgrade or downgrade. Some people have been downgrading firmware to get higher speeds. Weird right? It works for some.

These are two solutions......but you will have to put some work in (or your son) to try and fix this. Try searching keywords along with your router model number. Keywords like Priority and Tier and Firmware and XBOX etc.....

Lastly, how old is your router? Old? Brand new? If you have a rental (please tell me you don't) chuck that shit at the fucking cable company and buy one yourself. Rentals suck. The options available to you can also help you with issues. Sometimes a new router solves all problems. Sometimes.

Good luck.

The router is less than three years old and Apple (I believe) still sells the same model. It updates relatively frequently on it's own.

The modem is from the cable company and there is no rental fee, just the monthly service fee. That modem is several years old, maybe I'll call them and ask them for an updated model.

what J said, ditch rentals. and apple if you can.

i presume you use wifi for xbox ? if you can connect it to ethernet, that would give you some extra speed.
and xbox has "stand by" mode that you can use for downloading.

about priority, i would place 4k tv as #1 and xbox next.

i hope you get it sorted :toast:

I'm not deeply entrenched in the Apple v PC debate, but I do know this, I had multiple PC's and all ended up the same way in short time, slow to start, unresponsive and ultimately crashed. Some of those were cheap Best Buy laptops and some not so cheap laptops direct from the manufacturer and others expensive ones I had custom built. All ended up the same in much less time than I would consider getting my money's worth.

I've had multiple routers over that time frame as well at varying degrees of cost, all constantly needing reset or updated and a miserable effort applied just to keep devices connected.

A little over three years ago I bought a MacBook and an Apple Airport Time Capsule. The learning curve was steeper than I liked, but the laptop still works fine to this day. I open the lid and it turns on and is usable in less than a few seconds. I've had to reset the router for connectivity issues exactly one time and it tells me when it needs a firmware update instead of just quitting working waiting for me to figure out why.

I don't work from home nor am I creating apps/programs, I just want to surf the web and stream content and bet on games. I've gotten zero trouble from my current setup for years so I'll stick with the Apple products, for now anyway.

A few other suggestions

- Change/Shorten Ethernet cable. Have seen a crimped cord be a problem before.

- Methodically turn off devices and test speeds to try and located bandwith hogging devices

- Research your ISP to see if anyone has reported them as throttling or limiting your bandwidth.
