Irish book prematurely paid out ?1.4 million to Tiger backers
Irish sportsbook Paddy Power is out two million dollars after paying out Tiger Woods backers before the world?s best golfer teed off on Saturday.
Woods owned a four-shot lead entering the third round and held a two-shot margin entering Sunday?s final round. Y.E. Yang won the tourney, besting Woods by three strokes after a sensational birdie on the 18th hole.
Paddy Power was confident Woods would take home the hardware and European books sometimes pay out futures wagers early as a publicity ploy. Most often, it happens in English Premier League soccer when it looks apparent that one team will finish top of the table even though the season might only be as little as three-quarters finished.
Woods was 14-0 when holding or sharing the lead at the start of the final round of a major championship.
The collapse of local favorite Padraig Harrington helped the Irish bookies, but it?s clear that Paddy Power regrets its decision.
?It takes a special kind of dimwit to turn what should have been our best ever golf result into our worst,? the book said in a statement. ?Paddy Power punters are obviously the big winners here and have made like bandits getting paid out on Tiger as the winner.?
