Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt)

Darren Clarke to win 20/1 e.w. @ Ladbrokes
With David Howell withdrawing, there is certainly good value at 20/1 with Clarke, particularly in front of an Irish crowd. He showed his abilities last week when claiming the first round lead at the British Masters and maybe his competitive rustiness was a factor when he fell from 3rd to 11th in the final round. He has certainly had plenty of off-course issues to attend to since he withdrew from the Houston Open last month to be with his wife. But now he is back on the course, and particularly on the European Tour, he should be backed and looks a good proposition to win his fourth Tour title in Ireland.

Paul Casey to win 22/1 e.w. @ BetInternet
Casey remained in contention even longer than Clarke last week and looked set to win until dropping four shots in three holes around the turn on Sunday. That run and particularly his double-bogey at the 10th hole when he paid the penalty for attacking the green with his tee-shot maintained the question marks over his ability to close out events, but he was a two-time winner on Tour last year and he has finished in the top-5 in his three starts in the last month. At 22/1, there is certainly value here.

Nick Dougherty to win 50/1 e.w. available generally
By contrast, Dougherty did not contend last week at the Belfry, missing the cut though he followed his opening 78 with 69 so he should feel better coming into this event than he did last Thursday. And having finished 4th in his previous outing in Japan and achieved three other top-4 finishes in nine starts this year, his ratio of place finishes to starts is very healthy for a 50/1 shot. Add in his strong performance on this course last year and there is certainly value at these odds: he took a two-shot lead into the final round and started well, but never recovered from the shock of four-putting the 5th hole for a double bogey. He is a year older and an even better player now.

I certainly haven't lost confidence in you Pharlap--I generally don't look at Euro's other than plays by several here--and have been served quite well in doing so.Have doubled my little Accuman account and prob 50% of plays have been yours--Thank you :)

Nick Dougherty(50/1)(1/4 for1-2-3-4-5-6) e.w. @ GolfingGods
- - Whether missing a cut or missing out on a title chance, the Nick of now can be pretty tough on himself, and the immediate impact in subsequent events can play out for him along a full spectrum of favorable to unfavorable results, IMO. Signing for a 78 on the first day in the Tour's first signature event since Dubai was still nothing on par with Stephen Ames and his "9 and 8" drubbing, but in perfect conditions it was extremely humbling, and could use an appropriate answer. A dogged effort in tough conditions is certainly my expectation for this week, and Nick's ball flight and repertoire of shots actually suit the gale conditions I keep seeing in the forecasts.

Jarmo Sandelin(55/1) e.w. @ GolfingGods
- - In my book, it's unheard of in roulette and exceedingly rare in golf for me to pick up my marker after a winning wager at long odds. In Jarmo's case, although it wasn't technically a "win" after his 2nd place finish in Italy delivered on my 150/1 e.w. wager, I wasn't really planning on passing him by, and by Wednesday I actually had a good feeling about his chances at The Belfry when I placed my 100/1 e.w. wager. Now the wager definitely has a winning aura that I have no business thinking about (but my slow trigger finger still yielded a reduced price).

Paul Lawrie(100/1) e.w. @ Sportingbet
- - I can't see how a lineup of the favorites can emerge given the weather in the forecast, and I think there's something of a chance here; the weather is definitely responsible for my not looking at some of the shorter prices (i.e., Casey), and instead giving this play a shot. However, I thought this entry from his website diary was a bit peculiar: "British Masters 72+75=147 (+3) Missed Cut . . . I am disappointed that I just didn't get into my game over the two days. I didn't hit enough fairways and with the rough being pretty thick and the course playing long due to the rain at the start of the week, I was never really threatening to do anything. I was possibly a little rusty after two weeks off but with this the first week of four on the spin I am confident I will find some form soon. I will play full rounds today (Saturday) and tomorrow as if I were still at the tournament to try and build up my consistency for the Irish Open next week." Whatever.

I have several other plays in mind, but the pairings aren't even out, yet.

Played in those conditions at Ballyliffin, County Donegal in 2004. Windy, cold, rain smashing into your face.Golf at its purest. Had a nett 80 which easily beat the other 4 boys in my touring party.

Loved every minute of it!

pharlap - If holding on to the club passes from being a chore to being a comedy, it's too much for me. Otherwise, I'm with you.

Adding . . .

Outrights:

Simon Wakefield(150/1) e.w. @ Sportingbet
- - On the eve of the tournament, my ideal parameters for one or more additional plays featured an early/late draw (most definitely), at least one favorable angle I read or saw or heard somewhere (a "correspondent" at the Belfry reported he talked with an International Sports Management (ISM) bloke who was following Wakefield and reckoned his luck had been appalling for the last 2 or 3 events, but he keeps playing well and is much stronger mentally this year), a player that I had at least had under consideration and been doing some tracking of prior to this week, and with the uncertain test ahead, some conscious shading away from searching for value at the head of the market. This pick emerged on my reasons for believing he's capable of hitting solid shots in gale conditions and he won't be shitting on whatever opportunities come his way.

Matchups:

Eliasson(-125) over Lima (Tournament) @ 5dimes
- - That price got flipped from -105 yesterday when I printed out the lines and used the sheet for my studies, but similar discoveries when I have gone to pull the trigger have been a positive development during the last 6-8 weeks or so.

FINAL RESULT: 2-1; +3.25pts

Clarke 3rd
Casey 2nd
Dougherty 19th

Clarke holds a two-shot lead with ten holes to play when they re-start on Monday ... he loses that lead by the 16th but is still tied for the lead with Bjorn and Casey with one hole to play ... he duffs his chip from the front of the last green and three-putts, closely followed by Casey who also three-putts to hand the title to Bjorn. Looks like this season is carrying on where I left it before taking my break. Words fail me.
