IRS HELP

About a month ago I got a notice that I owed $67 from my 2007 taxes. A bit annoyed because of the amount of money I make and the taxes I pay I payed the $67 without questioning anything.

The other day I get a Letter of Assessment notifying me that they are looking into my taxes. It says on page three I will find more detail. All I see on page three is that the balance due is $0.00.
So they are telling me I owe nothing? I make well under $100,000 and in fact the last three or four returns I have filed I have owed money and sent in checks with the return.

Question does anybody know what this is and why are they bothering to harrass a person like me. Even if I do owe how much can it be that it would be worth it to come after me?

Unfortunately it means they are going to audit you and you are probably going to end up owing more money. Sucks that you will fall into the less than 1% that need to go through it-

It's my understanding from different news reports is that Obama is putting on a shit-load of auditors to "catch" all the cheaters and collect the monies that are currently owed. I think they are going after the middle class........ :facepalm:

I'm not positive but would wager what you in fact got -was an acknowledgement that they received your check and your balance is 0.

If you did not receive request for any type of info along with letter-- I doubt you hear anything else on issue.

This is exactly what it is. I get that stuff all the time for my business.

If you want peace of mind, call them up and ask what the letter means, otherwise, do like me, and throw it in the trash.

Dogs and Jack I hope you are right. Being upside down on the mortgage is not a good place to be. I had tons of equity but bought at the peak of the market. If they are true about losing about 10% a year I have lost over $200,000 on this house. I don't exactly need the IRS on my ass too. I also lost a ton on that sponge stock, not to mention Google came in and low balled me on my ONT stock. I did not lose money on that but they stole it for a fraction of what it was worth. Acting CEO got a nice job with Google. Shareholders voted down the deal two or three times, I forget, before they declared victory without ever releasing a vote count. Add that to a bunch of Doctors and Shrinks messing up my daughter with an array of drugs It has not been a great couple of years. But daughter, at least, is doing much better. Not normal yet but much better now that she has been taken off the 7 mood stabilizers they had her on. At a time her insurance didn't cover meds. One pill alone was $302 dollars a month. When we complained about all the meds and how she was getting worse the shrink said she could take her off of one of the meds. It was the $302 dollar a month . Her exact words. "I can take her off of that it doesn't do anything anyway."
Sorry for the rant. And thanks for the advise. At this rate I will be working until I am 90!

Its a receipt. I was ecstatic when I received mine last year... I was a little pissed that they hadn't sent electronically. They print monthly statements and they are usually a dozen pages long.

Factor in, paper, ink, service to printers, and postage, and the IRS could save a few $100 million right there.

Sheesh.
