This isn't intended to be a poll, but I would like to hear your thoughts. Last year, War Emblem blew away the field in the Derby and got zero respect. His detractors denounced his victory because he got loose on the lead. While this is true to some degree, he then came back to win the Preakness. He finally got whipped in the Belmont, but did have some trouble at the start that his trainer feels doomed him from the start.

Is Funny Cide good enough to win the Preakness. Personally, I think he is. He beat a damn good horse in Empire Maker. EM got boxed in a little bit early, but otherwise had a good trip. Funny Cide was tough in the stretch and looks good enough to me to easily repeat, or even improve on, his performance. Does anybody know his Beyer?

What are your thoughts?

I'm projecting a 112 Beyer for Funny Cide. That works well with the top 3 finishers and Empire and FC were around 111 and 110 in the Wood when they ran 1-2. I would call Funny Cide's win an upset, but definitely no shocker. My only knock on the horse before the Derby was Santos was all over him beating him to death in the Wood, and Bailey was hand-riding out Empire Maker. The half length margin looked very deceptive.

He could repeat but I want to see who else is in the field. To be quite honest, I believe the best performance in the Derby was Atswhatimtalkingabout; not any of the top 3.

I think it was a fluke. If you ran that race ten times over i think Empire would come out on top 9 times out of ten. What hurt Empire was being on the outside, that took up some time to get to the top. I think the only reason really in my opinoin that Funny Cide won was that he got a good inside position. He ran great, but i just think it was a fluke still.

Apparently Frankel has changed his mind and both Empire Maker and Peace Rules will be going to Pimlico. I didn't care for the way Empire Maker finished; he looked like he had dead aim and Funny Cide wouldn't let get past. I think EM is a tired horse and would be better off waiting until the Belmont.

funny cide is the real thing

funny cide is the real thing

thise horse lost to empire maker at the wood but with a bumped start and he barely lost.
this time he got out clean ran his race and took it home.
the derby is the toughest race to win because of all the horses and factors.
will funny cide win the preakness? i don't think so. the shorter distance i think helps the speedier horses as well as empire maker.
i believe though that the horse will be a great pick at the belmont.

The great thing about a horse with ratable speed like Funny Cide is they usually get good trips. If the pace is slow, he'll be up near the lead. If its fast, he'll be a little off the leaders. What I liked is how he dug in when Empire Maker came to him in the stretch. I don't know if he'll win the Preakness, but I do think he'll beat Empire Maker, who I think is a tired horse. I hope the sportsbooks offer that prop matchup.
