ha, i was actually going to start a thread regarding just that

imo, if ball leaves the park, its gone (aside from foul balls, which then would be foul) - if you catch it, but can;t stay in field of play, i'd figure, the ball would be ruled 'out of play' so to speak

if player leaves the park with ball...should not be an out. you must -as they say "keep it in the yard"

by this rule, couldnt a guy, ~granted this is an extreme scenario, but~ climb into the stands to make the catch? or is there some kinda rule where his last steps before securing out need to be in field of play? (perhaps)

Maybe if he had jumped the fence and then caught it but he caught it from the field of play.

Try taking that catch away from a player.

Here's one; Canseco's error when the ball hit him on the head and bounced over the fence that they ruled a HR. I think it should be ruled a ground rule double because that ball was not going to be a home run had it missed his head.

Watched the game on NESN and they said he left the ground with his whole body in play so it was an out, if he was reaching over the wall and fell into the pen it would have been a HR......

If he happens to FALL over a fence or into the stands or into a dugout after making the catch, the out is recorded, the ball is dead, and all base runners advance one base. Catch and Carry is covered under LL under rules 5.10(f) and 7.04(b). Second, if you rule a "catch and carry" you award one base, not two_Oct 20, 2009

Catch and Carry - Forums - Amateur Baseball Umpires' Association

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The term used is catch and carry

I call games at Smokey Joe Williams Field and they have a dead ball area that is still in the field of play (Beyond the dugout for pitchers to warm up) The ground rules out there are that you can catch and carry in to dead ball area but may not throw from the dead ball area. You may return to the field of play and throw and the ball shall remain live. If a ball is thrown from a dead ball area, the ball is immediately dead and base runners shall be awarded the proper advancement.

That was a Little league rule I posted - Here's MLB - Rule 5.10 (f) When a fielder, after catching a fly ball, falls into a bench or stand, or falls acrossropes into a crowd when spectators are on the field. As pertains to runners, theprovisions of 7.04(c) shall prevail. If a fielder after making a catch steps into a bench, but does not fall, the ball is inplay and runners may advance at their own peril.

7.04C - (c) A fielder, after catching a fly ball, falls into a bench or stand, or falls across ropesinto a crowd when spectators are on the field; Rule 7.04(c) Comment: If a fielder, after having made a legal catch, should fall into a stand oramong spectators or into the dugout or any other out-of-play area while in possession of the ball aftermaking a legal catch, or fall while in the dugout after making a legal catch, the ball is dead and eachrunner shall advance one base, without liability to be put ou
