Jimmie Johnson favored for Sprint Cup at betED.com

betED.com has defending champion Jimmie Johnson as the favorite to win the 2009 Sprint Cup Championship when the NASCAR season kicks off with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 15.

Johnson is a +250 favorite in NASCAR Betting Odds, followed by Carl Edwards at +320 and Kyle Busch at +350.

Last year, Johnson became just the second driver in NASCAR's 60-year history to win three consecutive titles, joining Cale Yarborough, who accomplished the feat from 1976-78.

Other drivers in the top five favorites to win the 2009 Sprint Cup Championship at betED.com are Jeff Gordon at +750 and Mark Martin at +800.

betED.com also has early lines for the 61st Daytona 500.

Johnson, who had seven victories and 22 Top-10 finishes last year, ended his championship season 69 points ahead of Carl Edwards, who completed the year with a series-high nine victories, including a win in the season-ending race at Homestead.

Johnson is expected to face several challenges defending his title, as many of NASCAR?s top drivers had disappointing showings last season and will be out for revenge.

Four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon had a particularly poor campaign, going winless for the first time since 1993.

There will be several new teams with different drivers during the 2009 season.

Ganassi merged with Dale Earnhardt, Inc., creating Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, or EGR; Petty Enterprises merged with Gillett Evernham, becoming Richard Petty Racing, or RPR; Former champion Bobby Labonte ended up with a merger team, signing on to drive the 96 car for the new Hall of Fame/Yates Racing.

And before the end of last season, Tony Stewart announced he was leaving Joe Gibbs Racing to become co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing.

For more than 20 years, the Daytona 500 has kicked off the Cup season.
