I saw where Boeheim retired today. Was thinking of all the contacts I had with him over the years. One summer worked his Orange Summer Camp. He comes off kinda straight but is one of the funniest coaches . He was a member of the NYBOAC coaches association of NY HS and College coaches . He paid his $15 dues and refused to be a Board remember. He was on the rules committee. A down to earth person. I remember he scheduled North Texas State one year to his Christmas tournament. I get a call at my school that Coach Boeheim left a message for me. Now I know its when of my fellow coaches pranking me like we all did to each other. John Thompson of Georgetown or Lou Carneseeca were the favorite fake calls that we all made to each other. The secretaries that took those messages had no idea who those people were. Anyway the real Boeheim called and told me that Coach Gales and North Texas were coming to Syracuse for a Christmas tournament and invited me to a dinner at the Hotel with NT's coach . Plus a ticket to the game the next day and accommodations since Syracuse was 2 hours north from where I lived. Anyway have so many stories over the years. He was always criticized because he only played his 2-3 zone on defense and wasn't an X and O's coach but that was BS. He made adjustments and used his strategy like many of the great coaches. He has been there for 41 years. They used to play at Mann fieldhouse and then they built the dome. Many thought Cuse would lose its home court advantage but that never panned out. Not sure if anyone remembers the controversy over his asst coach Bernie Fine. Boehiem was accused of deliberately hidding facts about Bernie's accusations and his wife's alleged incidents with Players . Jimmy B goes down as one of the all time greatest College coaches and I copied his 2-3 defense for many years. Cheney and Boe ran it and everyone knew and practiced against it. But everyone forgets something about running the same defense. Other coaches know and practice how to attack it over and over again. But I know how you are going to attack it so although other coaches have a strategy I know what your offense will be and then I can adjust, trap double team the corner etc etc. anyway sorry for this long boring story Cuse W/O Jimmy Boe will never be the same.

Been a SU fan for 52 years. Sad to see Jim go. Sat with him in the upper deck in 1979 at the NYS fair watching a high school all star game and had no idea who he was. There was about 25 of us in the stands. For some reason he sat a few seats away from me. I was working the fair with my old man and was on a break and wandered over to the arena and took a seat and was reading a book about Abraham Lincoln. He asked me what I was reading and it turned into a conversation about leadership. I was a 18 year kid and we spent the the next 30 minutes talking about the civil war and Lincoln 's role in saving the union. He knew his stuff. I got up when I had to go back to work. That winter I was watching a SU game and saw him and recognized him as the guy I spoke with in the stands that day. That is my Jim Boeheim story.

twofingers nice story. In 95-96 I was named the HS coach of the year in NY. So the HS coach gets to be a part of annual clinic speaker in Binghamton . I spoke on Sat morning after Speedy Morris of LaSalle. Then it was me and followed by Nolan Richardson of Arkansas. Jimmy Boe had spoken the night before. Now the HS coach has a small advantage because he knows many of the coaches in the audience. My topic was ' attacking zone defenses " and was basically Tom Davis zone attack , Tom was the coach of Boston College or Stanford back then. I had see Tom's attack and of course bought the VHS and had it memorized. Anyway Coach B is in the front row and I was very nervous. When they introduced me and read my accomplishments I got a huge standing ovation and Coach B was standing there clapping. There were 300-400 coaches in the audience but i only remember him ....and I started out by saying this zone attack does not work against a -2-3 or 2-1-2 defense. Everyone was laughing since the night before Coach B topic was his 2-3 zone. . When my speech at the clinic was over and I have given credit to Tom Davis, Coach B came over to me and said something like he never lost to BC when Davis coached there. He was so down to earth and congratulated me . Also asked me if I wanted to work his summer basketball camp but I told him I was committed to Army's West Point basketball camp this summer. I had over the years 2 players Cuse recruited. Joe F who went to UMass and Scott N who went to St Peters. And Cuse was talented. We had the Empire St games back then . It was kinda like a summer Olympics for HS and college kids and was always held in Syracuse. Coach B had an advantage because many HS recruits got to play at Mann Fieldhouse and later on in the dome. I need to stop because there are so many more stories about the Empire st games and Coach Boe . Its sad the last 2 years his teams weren't very good and still can't figure out why they went to the ACC and left the Big East .. thanks for sharing your story twofingers

Great story, box.
But if the year was 1996, Dr Tom was still the head coach at my Alma Mater, the university of iowa. the idiot AD Bob Bowsby didn’t run him off until 1998. And as bad as that move was, the AD at iowa now is even worse than ol boobs-by ever was

Tom Davis made a video called " attacking zone offenses" I watched it and used it always. As a coach who had a few sp ed players on my team i had them memorize their position attacking it I called it my " Stevie Wonder " offense Everyone had a number 1-5 1 and 2 were the gds 4 and 5 were the post players or power fds and the 3 was the wing. I am sure we ran it better then Davis's teams at BC Stanford and Iowa. I would drill my players over and over again and everyone knew where everyone was . I in the middle of the practice once the ball was entered would stop as a player and Blind fold him. when he had the ball He had to tell me with his eyes closed where everyone was. When this player had the ball everyone would move flash, duck in etc to a position and my Stevie Wonder knew where everybody was. I coached Girls AAU and if I went over to my daughters school right now here in Austin she played the 4 and 5 would know the offense. I get on facebook many of my former players who say " Coach I could run that offense right now" I drilled and drilled into them the attack of the zones The weakness's the seams the penetration etc So what ever zone you threw at us it didn't make a difference 2-3,1-2-2 . 1-3-1 Only a few adjustments had to be made and if your players knew blind folded what you were doing imagine them with open eyes. Now all you had to do was execute. I stole everything from other coaches my entire life. Al McGuire philosophy of basketball. Jimmy Boe helped me with zones and of course Tom Davis VHS video
I also remember Coach Boe when he killed someone on the NY state thruway in a driving accident. Rumors were he was drunk and knew the cops. Everything was unfounded but he was under a microscope at Cuse. Again sad to see him go and watched his press conference last night, He said it was up to the University. University announced he retired. A little strange but he was a great coach and when people think of Cuse hoops he is the 1st person you think of. And i look at myself . I met his 1st wife so that makes me feel even older.. good luck today have to handicapp a few games

Yes, after Dr Tom left iowa, he took a couple of years off and then Drake offered him the head coaching job. Drake was a terrible program and Davis turned it around before retiring and then Keno, his son, took over. Keno coached Drake one year, then got the providence job.
Hard to find a more decent and kind man as Dr Tom and his son is, too.
Iowa basketball hasn’t been the same since the university ran him off and as long as the current idiot AD is in charge it will stay that way.

this story really tells you the type of man Dr Tom Davis is.
