Coaching HS basketball for over 30 years I had the opportunity to see 100 of college coaches at basketball clinics. Think I went to 30-50 clinics over the years , then working summer basketball camps
meeting many more.
Hubie Brown by far was the best clinician . Bobby Knight,Jim Boe , etc were all great and you learned something, Tonight I was driving down to see Tex St - Louisiana Laf game when I heard on the radio that Chaney had passed away. I got to see him a few times because he didn't like giving clinics . It was in Cherry Hill NJ just across the river from Philadelphia.
His topic was 2-3 match up zone defense... and of the 300-400 coaches attending none of us were going to use it . He told us that from the start . But he said 'Im a story teller I 'll tell you guys some stories .
and driving today I thought about his one story that had always stuck with me..
I have told it here before .
" we were playing St Joes and in our match up zone but they were shooting the eyes out of the basket". I had to go man./man which I rarely did." " St Joes number 32 scored on 2 uncontested lay ups and no one was guarding him < I yelled a few times who the F has 32 as he scored his 3rd basket. " I called time out and told my players" my grandmother was born blind and she always knew were the sugar was in the fuck..in cupboard " And you guys can't find one player out there" We all laughed .. He told so many stories no one really cared about a match up zone.
Think he was 89 when he passed away ... He ran that slow down, patient offense and tough defense. His teams were so disciplined . He was such a father figure for all those kids he had coached. I know he is up there in heaven with a clip board and whistle telling St Peter " we practice early in the morning Peter... and Peter would be saying " John we have a language rule up here so please refrain from some of your 4 letter directions up here "

Rest in Peace John .. and thank you for allowing me to get to hear you a few times I always wondered if his grandmother was really blind but I will always remember that story.
