Temple suspends Chaney for rest of regular season

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- John Chaney was suspended for the rest of the regular season by Temple on Friday for ordering rough play by one of his players, who proceeded to foul out in 4 minutes against Saint Joseph's and broke an opponent's arm.

The Hall of Fame coach had suspended himself for one game Wednesday and apologized for his actions. He will miss Temple's home game against Massachusetts on Saturday and road games against Rhode Island and La Salle, before returning for the Atlantic 10 tournament.

``I think my behavior is reprehensible and, as I've said 1,000 times, I take responsibility,'' Chaney told The Associated Press in a phone interview. ``If it's the judgment of the school to suspend me, I can accept the responsibility of my actions.''

Temple president David Adamany announced the suspension in a statement.

``I have advised coach Chaney of this decision and coach Chaney has again expressed his deepest regrets for his actions,'' Adamany said.

Chaney, angered by what he thought were illegal screens by Saint Joseph's, put in seldom-used 6-foot-8, 250 pound Nehemiah Ingram against the Hawks on Tuesday to ``send a message.'' Ingram fouled forward John Bryant hard, sending him sprawling to the ground and breaking his arm. Bryant will likely miss the rest of the season.

Chaney said he called Bryant on Friday morning to apologize and also said he planned to talk to his parents. Chaney also offered to pay for any of Bryant's medical bills.

``I feel very contrite about John Bryant,'' Chaney said.

Saint Joseph's was traveling to Rhode Island and no one from the team was immediately available for comment.

Atlantic 10 commissioner Linda Bruno supported Temple's decision to extend the suspension and said Chaney failed in his responsibility as a teacher and mentor.

``He is aware that our code of conduct states any further behavior that does not reflect the standards of our conference will have severe consequences,'' Bruno said.

Chaney's only other suspension came in 1994, when Temple suspended him for one game after he threatened then-Massachusetts coach John Calipari during a postgame news conference.

Chaney said he did not regret describing Ingram as a ``goon'' after the game because he said the term had been used to describe his team the last time they play Saint Joseph's.

``It was just a word that was reverberating throughout my head,'' Chaney said.

Chaney also said the suspension sent a strong message to Temple's students that abhorrent behavior would not be tolerated.

After some students spit in the direction of Saint Joe's players and cheerleaders, Adamany said the first few rows of the student section at the Liacouras Center would be empty for Saturday's game as a reminder they should uphold the standards of good sportsmanship.

``I incited them by my behavior, I guess,'' Chaney said.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Aaron McKie, who played for Chaney from 1991-94, stood by his former coach.

``I'm sure Coach in his private time, his down time, probably regrets what he said because he's always trying to do things the right way,'' McKie said. ``I hope people don't misunderstand that. It's just an unfortunate incident.''

The Hall of Famer has a 721-294 record in 33 seasons. He said he hasn't decided how the suspension will affect his decision about whether to return for another season.

``I've had a reputation for many years, I've done many things wrong and made a lot of mistakes,'' Chaney said. ``My name is a lightning rod. Right now, I'll just take inventory of myself.''

He should step down at the end of the season. Guy is a complete clown and it's just another case of how the AD/School is afraid to fire a black guy.

I can see Al Sharpton on Broad Street now, perhaps even a Jesse Jackson sighting....

Complete jackass....white or black....Larry Eustachy is a class act compared to this guy...

you remember the Chiaparri incident? Where Sportscenter didn't even need an intro, just cut to him walking in saying "I'm gonna kill you". Ahh, the days. And now this. NCAA Street where a guy fouls out in 4 min, sent in like the goon in hockey at they end.

I just don't understand how this guy keeps his job, it's amazing.

Anyone remember when Calipari had to resign for calling a reporter a "Mexican idiot"?

That was worse than this??

Uh oh, I sense the hand of the politically correct police in this!!!

has nothing to do with race?

Right!! :mj07: You must have missed the interview I just saw with this dope coach.....he had the nerve to bring up the firing of Tyrone Willingham and compare it to this situation and whether he would be suprised if Temple asked him to resign or fired him.....Cheany said, "it wouldn't suprise me at all if they did....look at the football coach at Notre Dame that was just fired, he was doing great things and got fired." If that isn't searching for the race card, I don't know what is....to try and compare a coach who was let go because of lack of wins and lack of having the team prepared to play with his dumba@@ move the other night is a joke.....he brought Tyrone up solely because of his race and that is the truth whether you want to believe it or not. If this goes any deeper than just a suspension, mark my words, race will become THE issue here. Have you wondered why ESPN and all of the other big boys out there really didn't go after this all too hard? Is it because of race? If a white coach had "sent in the goon" and broke a kids arm and possibly hurt a schools chances at making the dance I can assure you ESPN and others would be having a field day....calling for the coaches head. And what's with this meeting with the kids family? Coach trying to smooth over any thoughts he may be liable for something....Chaney's a stroke!! ;142loser:

The media has touched this, some at cbs sports and espn have call for his head today. The main stream media is slanted to the left.

I agree bryanz....this SHOULD have nothing to do with race....unfortunately, it does, will, whatever. If Chaney would have just said hey, if they fire me I understand, I was wrong and will be a big man and take whatever penalty this offense brings.....but he didn't, he's brought in other names and is trying to bring other issues up here and that is my problem with him and this whole mess. :mj14:

I would guess that you're white, like myself and probably like the 95 percent of users on this site.

My comments were clear and very correct. I didn't mean to offend anybody, but the statement is dead on.

Nobody will touch this issue with a 10-foot pole and especially ESPN. He should've been fired immediately after the Calipari stunt, but still hung around (pun intended).

This was a complete joke and the jackass could've kept his mouth shut and played stupid, not knowing what his players were doing, but he openly admitted to having his players foul hard and with intention of hurting the St. Joseph's players.

He's a suppressed idiot, who thinks he's living in the 1800's....And to bring Ty Willingham into the mix is a joke.

Personally, I laugh at the comments of why aren't there more black coaches in college football. Shit, the three (Willingham, Croom and Dorrell) all suck as it is....

They're better than some white guys, but to put them in the upper echilon is a joke. It will be fun to watch Ty and Carl battle it out for the basement of the Pac 10 this year..

Enough said....fire John Boy

I agree....fire his ass!!! Most racist coach there is
besides Nolan Richardson and he got fired too
by Arkansas....I would have told Chaney to take
an hike a few years ago when he threatened to
KILL Calipari.....Did anybody just hear that, HE
THREATENED TO KILL ANOTHER COACH!!!!!
This guy is a joke....black or white. I hope they
trully think about this and fire him...that bullshit
isnt needed in college hoops....the purest sport
that we have going right now.

Good luck and kick ass

mole ,I personally have to laugh at the way you think, you think all black coaches suck.Just for the record, TY was coach of the year on the west coat and his short stay at nd could stand up to Any coach they ever had their. By the way you think and I use the word think liberally, all white coaches suck because of what jerry foust did at ND. Groom should have turned that program around by now,RIGHT ? The one thing TY & GROOM have in common is that ,they both took over programs that were run into the ground by white coaches.

Chaney of now reminds me of Woody Hayes of old. He's a great coach who's past his prime, doing antics that would get a younger man fired in second (regardless of race). I guess you could say he survives because he's tenured.

If he's classy, he'll step down after this year - just like Hayes.
