Memphis, Tenn. ? John Daly, who lives on the course where he is playing in the Stanford St. Jude Championship, reported to authorities that his wife attempted stab him with a steak knife early Friday, a newspaper reported.
Deputies told The Commercial Appeal that Daly, 41, had minor cuts on both sides of his face. Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Shular didn't immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Red marks could be seen on both of Daly's cheeks as he warmed up on the course Friday afternoon. Play had been delayed by weather.
The newspaper reported that Daly's wife called authorities to report an altercation but she and the couple's children were gone from their home near the TPC Southwind course when deputies arrived shortly after 7 a.m. CDT.
"Officers located the kids, but were unable to find the suspect," Shular told the paper.
No charges have been filed.
Daly was tied for eighth after the first round in which he had a triple-bogey and rebounded with five straight birdies. He and his wife argued last night at a restaurant near the golf course, he told deputies.
The golfer with five career victories, including the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open, has struggled this year. This is his 12th event this year, but he is in this event on a sponsor's exemption. He has one Top 25 but has made only three cuts this year and withdrawn from three other events.
