A terrible tragedy the young man was just 24. Fernandez brought joy to so many with his talent and was huge inspiration to the Latino community here in South Florida. Besides, Fernandez also had an inspiring backstory, having left Cuba as a teenager. Nearly six years later, he would reunite with his grandmother in tear-jerking fashion.
Ironically today was to be Jose day at Marlins Park, the game today has now been cancelled.

Fernandez and two others were killed in an early-morning boating accident along the coast of Miami beach. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reportedly received a call concerning a possible accident around 3 a.m. ET. Upon arrival, they found an overturned boat that had crashed into the rocks. Three bodies were subsequently discovered.

RIP JOSE ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
He was a strong swimmer. During the boat ride escaping home, his fourth attempt to defect from Cuba (he was jailed after the 3rd), he had to jump in the water to save someone he heard fell over in rough seas, turned out it was his mother. He was 15 years old then.

He became a US citizen last year, always very appreciative of this country and it's freedoms...he speaks of that in the clip below...He recently announced he and his girlfriend are expecting a baby.

He was such a positive role model to kids too...
We met him several times over the last few years in spring training and as season ticket holders.
Always gave my kids baseballs and talked to them.

Crazy part was we decided to go to tomorrows game instead of today because we ONLY wanted to watch him pitch.

Fucking bummed out.

Gotta wonder what the hell happened out there at 3am to have a 30 foot boat crash into the rocks!! I'm sure they were fishing at that hour, but that's a big ass boat to have flipped over like that. Mini hurricane or something? This is so tragic!!! And he was expecting a baby...my God! I sure hope they weren't doing stupid shit...drinking and boating or something

this hard an impact, probably died near instantly.

from local press:

The overturned boat remained in the water Sunday morning, its engine partially submerged as its nose pointed skyward, as debris from the crash was scattered over some of the large jagged rocks.

Because the boat was on a jetty, the Coast Guard notified Miami-Dade police, which turned the investigation over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

"It does appear that speed was involved due to the impact and the severity of it," said Veloz, the FWC spokesman. "It does appear to be that they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty, and the accident happened."

Veloz said there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were a cause in the crash. He also said none of the three victims wore a life jacket, and that the boat was owned by a friend of Fernandez's.

"It does pertain to a friend of Jose who is very well connected with several Marlins players and I have stopped that boat before for safety inspections with other Marlins players on board," Veloz said. "We know that this boat knows the area. We just can't answer why this happened."

Been there in that exact area. I can tell you at night you see nothing. They were a few feet from missing the rocks.
Going fast in a boat it was over in a blink of an eye. They were obviously headed in and just didnt see the end of the jetty or miscalculated. It was just a freak accident. Watch the coast guard will now install lights at the end of the jetty. Such a tragic event that could have easily been prevented. Seems we are seeing more and more tragic events lately that could have been avoided.

In a world of shitty entitled athletes this was one of the good guys, been following his life and career for a while. I heard the ESPN update on my way to work this morning say, "and more on the news of Jose Fernandez...." I puled over and read it and was crushed...I literally balled up and have many times listening to the press conference today....this is tragic and Miami as well as many around the world are crushed...and the little girl they are expecting...I am sick
