I have told this story here maybe 3 times ,maybe 4 ,even maybe 5 times.. but here it goes again
Its in the early afternoon and I just graduated High School a month before and was working at Playland Rye Beach Amusement park in Rye NY.I normally worked the boardwalk on the beach with the Long Island sound in front of me but today my boss put me in the park at the banana split stand. I would always work the boardwalk for a few hours and then he would move me into the park..
Marty Marano a lawyer now and I were working the stand.. An announcement on the PA came on.. they announced they were going to a live feed radio on CBS with Walter Cronkite { a few years before I served Walter and his wife at the banana split stand. he lived in the next town over,thats another story}
If I remember Walter announced the Eagle was 500 yds from landing.. when he got to 100 feet he started a countdown .. just then a guy came over to our stand and ordered a banana Boat[ the biggier banana split} We both had stopped and was listening to the PA.. the guy at the counter saw Marty and I listening to the PA and said " sonny where is my boat". We had not made it yet.. So the wise ass 18 yr old said something to him like " you can wait Sir man is landing on the moon ...I said "you will always remember where you were right now.. " He could care less and called me sonny one more time.. I did wait until I heard " the Eagle has landed" and then made his banana boat...he walked over to the benches and sat next to his wife who was already sitting there.. Marty and I laughed and said what a jerk... but I do remember also the astronauts did walk on the moon until a later . once they landed they went to sleep. think later Neil got out and did his famous " One small step " I got home later that night and saw it on TV.. the park had closed not sure if I saw it live or on the news .. that I can't remember but will always remember that guy upset at me for stopping to listen to the lunar landing.
So it 41 years ago wow many of you guys here aren't even 40 lol So I know where I was on July 20th 1969
now a month later all my friends are going to woodstock to see a outdoor concert.. I don't go because I want to work the weekend and make money.. because we are all going to the Jersey shore before we all go off to college.. all my buddies are going to schools in the East .. Villanova,Cornell,Colgate RPI,Bowling Green,St Bonnie, Niagara and Marist.. I'm going to North Texas St in Denton Texas...you can see who had the highest SAT scores..
But I do know where I was on July 20th 1969.. and I do know about 3 or 4 weeks later where I was.. not at Woodstock with all my buddies but making banana splits and boats making the $2.35 an hour..
hope everyone is staying careful .. after 8 straight days of over a 100 here in Austin we broke the streak yesterday.. it hit 99 ..:0065:0065
