Observations and quotes out of the mouth of N.Y. Yankee Gary Sheffield:

Sheffield all but appointed himself the Yankees' most valuable player in an interview with New York magazine, accusing reporters of distorting the truth and ruining team chemistry.

"It happens because you're white and I'm black," Sheffield said. "My interpretation of things is different. You don't see it the way I see it. You write how you understand it, how you would articulate it, not how I, as a black man, would articulate it."

These kinds of comments make me fume. :cursin: Since when can thowing a baseball, hitting a ball, catching a ball ....be interpreted as BLACK or white. Geez, it's basball for christ sakes. Guys like this continue to perpetuate the myth of racism in sports and it drives me crazy. Blacks make up around 12% percent of the overall population, yet they dominate the football squads, and they far exceed that ratio in baseball.....forget about the NBA. A guy like Sheffield dwells in the upper percentile of wage earners in the US and he finds the time to whine about his being "misunderstood as a black man"? He should be kissing the ground he walks on.
I'm not going to belabor the point, and I could go on and on....it's sickening

I'm not sure what forum this particular rant should fit (basegall, general, politics?), and I'm sorry if this is not the right one. I needed to rant and I already feel better :)

couldn't happen to a better team, the yanks have a lot of great individual players, not a great team. For sheffield to make these comments at this point in time just shows how shallow he really is. His selfish attitude is unbelievable. He won't be wearing pinstripes next year...

but this is just my interpretation of it. I'm white so the way I understand it and articulate it are probably different. I just don't see it the way he does...

I'm a fan of two teams, my beloved O's, even tho they continue to lose I still love em, and whoever the yanks are playing. (GO BLUE JAYS!!!)

I'm not sure if there's a 'racist' sub-forum here, but if so then that's the answer to your question.

The best of all, didn't he want and get a contract extension this past year from the Yankees? Not sure on that, but if he couldn't handle New York or not being the main guy on this team.......leave for another.

Adding comments from editorial piece on another sports site:

And as to his claim that the white writers don't get his point of view, as an Afro-American, well, it's a comment without logic, because he is saying simultaneously that the media does really understand Jeter -- whose father, Charles, is black and mother, Dorothy, is white -- and Rodriguez, a man with Hispanic roots. And it's a statement which, in itself, is tinged with racism: To say that reporters don't get him because they're white is as ridiculous as if someone suggested that Sheffield doesn't understand a white reporter merely because he's black.
