Nor should Dana :mj07:

Dana White is an embarrasment to UFC

Tiny by collegetuner on Jun 16, 2009 3:09 AM EDT Comment 4 comments

As the UFC gains popularity and positions itself to become a major contender in the talk of the biggest sports in the world, unfortunately as big as Dana White has managed to grow the UFC he may ultimately be the man that kills it. While the UFC is currently undergoing unprecedented growth it is also under attack for its legitimacy and the sometimes brutal nature of the sport. UFC athletes can hardly be called role models and sometimes seem to cross the line between what is acceptable and what is not. Perhaps the biggest problem is that the man at the top of this multi million dollar company acts like he is still the head of his college frat.

Imagine if the commissioner of the NBA David Stern had a you tube video where he was hurling insults at a reporter for writing something that didn?t shed a good light on the NBA. Imagine on top of that if he then refused to even apologize for his ridiculous remarks. He would be fired before we even officially heard about it. The stereotypes about UFC fighters are that they are brutal and their fighters are too dangerous to ever become mainstream athletes. Dana White is only supporting this perception about his fighters in his actions and words.

While he deserves all of the credit in the world for growing the UFC exponentially every year, he is what will ultimately keep it from having mainstream success. New York is a prime example of a city that UFC would love to hold its venues, but government leaders are reluctant to allow the UFC in New York citing Dana Whites ridiculous rants as one of the primary reasons.

Is it too much to ask of Dana White to dress appropriately at his nationally televised events. Dressing like a frat boy is fine for the months where you are not on national TV, but blazers and jeans do not cut it. Quit with the ridiculous use of profanity, he sounds like a frustrated high school kid trying to sound tough. Is it too much to ask for him not to curse and throw out profanities at every news conference he holds? He needs to quit talking trash about his stars, last time I checked they were the ones getting into the cage and making you money so stop trash talking about your stars like Anderson Silva. Sometimes it seems like he would rather have these guys fight to the death and have shortened careers then seen true MMA fighting. For the love of god quit making video bogs and finally act like you represent a multi million dollar company.

The UFC will never gain mainstream popularity with this monkey at the helms. They will never be on national television they will never get off of Spike TV, and they will never get major corporate sponsors. Fact is the UFC is going to need bigger corporate backing then Harley Davidson. Dana White is an embarrassment to not only MMA but himself, and the fact is things like his blog set back the organization. You can not deny how far White has brought the UFC under his leadership but things like this can set it back permanently. Fact is the UFC needed Dana White in the beginning to create some hype about the company, I believe the UFC has outgrown the leadership the White can provide.

The UFC needs a friendly ambassador that will open it up to mainstream audience and mainstream corporate backing, instead of a fucking idiot who can?t keep his mouth shut. Maybe it speaks to Whites success that his embarrassing behavior is just dismissed as Dana being Dana. I believe it speaks more to the fact that the UFC is light-years away from being compared to its bigger counterparts. In these major sports the line of credibility and accountability is not only defined but also enforced. It?s like when your parents would say ?if you can?t act like an adult then we can?t treat you like an adult?. Dana its time for you to act like a fucking adult or everyone is going to start treating you like the frat boy adult you are.

gee what a shocker....somebody hates Dana.

I just love how so many bash this guy, if it were not for him there would be no MMA. Some seem to forget that.

I mean shit he does make some smart decisions, and goes out of his way to be there for fans. Why so many bash this guy relentlessly is beyond me. I mean shit he ain't that bad. And he's worth millions and millions of dollars he has to be doing something right:shrug:

Dana has made some big mistakes, but he knows the business you can't argue that. Always bash the guy on top, guess that's just the way it is.

He may be a prick to many, but the dude knows what he's doing, you can't argue with him there. And he's passionate about the sport, that is refreshing.

Kick, i honestly believe a lot of it has to do with his cursing. A few weeks back im trying to get my girl into MMA which is a feat in itself, while watching it on Spike Dana is throwing the F bomb around every other sentence. It completely turned her off. Bad enuf she hates fighting but any chance i had to get her to like it Dana ruin it for me. How many fans that are on the brink of watching this do u think he turns off? How is this not brought to his attention? I would hate to have a child and try to get him into this and Dana is cursing on national TV like a drunken sailor. Most parents are not gonna let their kids watch this. That was another thing my girl pointed out. The blogs i think are great that is why i think this author has a hidden agenda. He starts off making sense then gets annoyed at the end of the letter and starts name calling. :142smilie

I think there in lies the serious problem for the UFC. GETTING NEW FANS. New fans coming over and there are still plenty out there see or hear Dana speak and immediately think Vince Mcmahon act.
It is one thing to say what you mean(I like that about people and Dana), but to drop F-Bombs in every sentence is just stupid and uncalled for.It really dumbs him down. It is something he could change without changing who he is or what he says, but just how he goes about it.
As for the article, I agree with some things he said and not with others. The UFC is going to need more than just Harley Davidson as a major sponsor. Where are the beer companies? And not Odoul's. I know getting sponsors with the economy is tough so I will let this slide for now.
I do agree they need a friendly ambassador face to represent UFC even if he works for Dana. Couture when he retires is a solid choice but he will not work for Dana.
Dana clearly deserves much if not all of the credit for MMA getting to this point. Problem is it looks like it has peaked. Now the challenge is to keep it peaked and even grow more.
Ask Vince Mcmahon about peaking and then dropping off.
Bringing in Kimbo to TUF was smart as it is a lock for ratings to soar on that show where ratings had been going the wrong direction for last 2 seasons.
The hardcore MMA guys are going nowhere no matter who runs the groups, but average Joes are not following a guy like Dana.

"the bunker"
not a big dana fan,but i get that he`s pretty good at running the show and huckstering...he gets alot of attention for the sport...

what i don`t get(and i know i`m in the minority)is the clownish stuff,like the tapout crew.....

i think stuff like this gives mma a wwe vibe.......

i understand that it appaeals to the younger crowd....it`s sort of unfortunate that mma needs these "kids" in their fan base so they can sell goods and apparel....but many of these kids at the shows act like morons.... and clog the mma boards with ridiculous fanboy garbage....

i guess the idea is to expand your base, but,i don`t think the tapout stuff, with guys dressing like circus clowns, lends itself to giving the sport an air of legitimacy...

but,that`s me...

I agree that there are way to many gimmicks in MMA right now Tapout crew included.
My wife called me a pervert simply for watching the EliteXC cards with all the chicks dancing around for no apparent reason.
I told her the NFL does it so why not MMA. I mean seriously, what function do the NFL cheerleaders serve other than eye candy. At least in HS they would do cheers to get the crowds loud. They would have to put a stripper pole out there for NFL fans to respond to them.
