I don't post as much as I would like to on here but over the past month or so I have been in the hospital with kidney stones in both of my kidneys and a urinary tract infection. I have never had them before and I was curious if anyone has had them. My doctor tells me that it is the worst pain a man can have and referenced it to child birth for a woman.

I have had 3 surgeries over the past weeks and one was called a liptotrysie (sp?) were apparently the blast stone into smaller fragments.

I haven't passed any of the stones yet and the doctors were a bit shakey to describe what they would look like if I had. I am pretty fatigued and haven't been able to do a full work week in quiet sometime.

I guess I was just posting this because I was at home and wanted to see if anyone had any similiar experiences or advice to help ease the pains that I'm feeling (vicotin seems to make things worse).

I just had one 2 weeks ago. They are correct, it was extremely painful. My stone was 3mm and only took a few hours to pass. All the pain comes from the stone going from your kidney to your bladder. The tube form your kidney to the bladder is very tiny and the pain comes from the stone passing through this tube. You'll be able to see little jagged edges on the stone after it's out. It started off as a pain in my stomach and by the time I got to the doctor they said I needed a cat-scan and it has to be STAT. During the cat-scan the pain was at it's worst and the pain was so bad it made me puke. Then a nurse supervisor came in and asked if I was from the ER and they said no, I had come in through admitting. They wheeled me down to the ER and started giving me something for the pain. After about 30 min. my pain had gone from a 10 down to a 3 and then to a 0. They prescribed a pain killer and by the time I got home and had to pee,... out it came. The whole thing lasted about 4.5 to 5 hours from start to finish.

A few of my wife's clients have had them and they have also had babies and said the pain with the stones is by far worse than the baby...........

All I can say is good luck. Hopefully they'll be very small.................

I had one, and I don't want anymore. Jawz is correct, the pain come from passing from the kidney through the ureter to the bladder. The actual urinating out the stone didn't hurt me at all. I was actually disgusted that it was as small as it was and didn't hurt anymore than it did. It looked like a very small cockleburr.

Lennon, it sounds like you have a worse problem than we did with a much larger stone since u had lithotripsy.

The cause much of the time is from a persistent state of dehydration, not from over-intake of calcium. Keep yourself well hydrated in the future, and hopefully, u won't get anymore.

this stuff sounds horrible. I pray I don't get this. It would be awesome if you could give a pill to some major league a-hole and he would get this.
gl hope it's over soon!

I've heard of these for ages, but don't know much about them. I'm almost afriad to ask as I haven't, to say the least, led the most healthy lifestyle. But.... what causes these? Is it related to diet? Genetics? Just curious. I wish you the best in dealing with it.

most of it is genetic....

some people absorb calcium better than others and then promptly excrete it in the urine....not much you can do...this is the most common cause....

there are other reasons you can also get calcium stones and there are some other types of stonesin certain disease states...not much you can do about any of them....

best thing is to put a piece of wood in your mouth and take your medicine no pun intended

horrible pain i would ask for morphine

I am out of the the hospital and have been for about a a day and a half now, the side pains are really bad and to be honest the vicotin hasn't done much, when I was in the hospital the morphine more or less put me asleep but it also killed any eating and really havent had an appetite or kept anything down since. Unfortunately with my job, there is a lot of stress and I am on the road a lot, so I heard that might be some of the factors. The doc said that the increased calcium build up are causing them but they want me to strain everything until I go in for surgery on Monday morning, just in case to analyze it. I had the lipotrypsy (ultra blasted) about a week and a half ago on my right side (10mm stone) and now I am going Monday to get the stint removed and then getting the same procedure on my left size with a smaller stone (5mm)

The only remedy I have had since getting home is taking long hot baths, it seems to settle the pain from what the meds can't do. I don't know if any of you have ever done that before but it seems to help. Thinking about getting a heating pad as well but this is like the least fun thing I have ever had.

Lennon.......

I know exactly what you are going through!
I actually read the warnings on the Vioxx and continued to try to get by with percosett and Oxycontin at home for a few days cuz the warnings scared me.......called another Doc and asked the pharmacists........pain was bad so I went back to the VIOXX.......NO more pain!!!

Oh ...watch out for the pain killers ....constipation can also be a bitch...with this...You should be taking stool softeners

that vioxx is a good drug. I'm on it's competitor, Celebrex, and I couldn't live as productive a life as I do without it. When I had mine I had to CONSTANTLY move. I felt that if I could just stretch or bend one way or another it would cure my pain. Nothing did. At the ER they gave me IV Morphine (this stuff rocks), IV Valium, IV Toradol, and IV Phenergan. If you're still in a lot of pain, get something else for it. Vicodin is a good drug, but it's a lightweight. Lots of stuff that is more powerful.

I would say since you travel, u probably eat a lot of fast food and drink a lot of cokes and caffeinated beverages. Limit all those and drink water, and plenty of it. Don't get dehydrated.

feel your pain. Heating pad is a absolute must.
The heating pad dulls the pain to a almost tolerable level.

I have been in a ambulance with stones, and had to drive myself to ER throwing up out the window.
Just a horrible exp over the years. With the last one I had there was a loud audible crunch as it
broke off from my kidney like a glacier. It got stuck and they had to operate to get it out. I can take just about any pain for a hour or more. But that kind of pain that does not stop with no relief for up to five hours. Come on.

I had lipotripsy ten years ago and that breaks them up so you dont really feel the passing of the stones. Sure was expensive though.

I hate to tell you this but the single most pain I endured from any kidney stone experience was the removal of the stent. Because of the stent I pissed blood for two days and it hurt. I was trying to work during that time and it was almost impossible. Anyway they take the stent out with no medication or pain pills. They do it with a local anastehetic. Then he pulls out this huge apparatus that looks like Edward Scissorhands. There is a camera attached to it.

Yep you guessed it that thing has to go up your dick while he looks around in the dark for the stent. Seriously take a handfull of the Vioxx with you and if they wont give you anything, excuse yourself to the bathroom and take them all.

I wanted to seriously hurt the Doctor who told me that it wouldnt hurt and be over in a few minutes.

Man hope you get through the stent thing better than I did. Next time I will refuse the stent if I can.

Title of this month's DRUG TOPICS magazine is about Kidney Stones. They've devoted a rather large section in talking about the causes and cures. They don't have a website, but you can shoot me a fax # and I'll send it your way. Rascals are VERY painful, and we see a multitude of medications prescribed to dull the pain. Stadol NS(butorphanol) seems to have better results than any of the opiate derivative drugs.

Hadn't seen Vioxx prescribed for stones before, but I'm glad it worked. Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra are in the cox 2 inhibitor classification, and are usually written for arthritic problems.

UPDATE

UPDATE

The stones are gone in the right kidney as well as the stint. Surgery for lipotrypsy on left kidney set for next monday.

To add insult to injury, I have an ear infection in my right ear and cannot hear anything. Had to go to the ER (I think they know my name like the Toolman) for 2 hours last night to get some drops, he said it was probably from the hot baths that I was taking more frequently during the stone pain. I fear that my left side might be following, I don't know why but I just have a feeling.

All in all this has been the worst month I can ever remember and consulted with some advisers at work and am considering taking a medical leave for the next few weeks until I can get things straightened out.

Thanks for the support and all the info guys , I appreciate it.

Took a much needed break 65! Back in the groove since football season cranked back up. Down your way last week and unfortunately spent 5 1/2 hrs. at Warren County detention center. Noticed they spent a lot more money on the outside of that place vs. inside.

Probably need to grab all the vioxx you can get your hands on as Merck initiated a voluntary recall on their 2.5 billion dollar little pill. Was my number #4 dispensed brand drug. Wouldn't be surprised to see Celebrex and Bextra follow same path...
