Outright plays (total stake per play: 2pts)

Morris Hatalsky to win 20/1 e.w. @ Bet365 and Ladbrokes
Simple pick to make. Hatalsky has finishes of 1st, 2nd and 4th in his last five starts and has finished in the top-10, including a best of 3rd place, in the three years that this event has been staged at The Hills. With a similarly impressive record in other events in Texas, this looks a solid play.

Brad Bryant to win 25/1 e.w. @ Bet365, William Hill and Ladbrokes
Bryant can also count a win and a 2nd place in his last five starts and a similarly impressive record on this course, so this is a very similar pick to Hatalsky. He finished 5th on his debut on this course last year and finished 4th in his other start in Texas last year (Administaff Small Business Classic) despite holding the lead with one round to play. He was born in Amarillo, Texas , so that should be another advantage and closed with a 66 in the final round last week, so there are no concerns about his form either. So, just like Hatalsky, a rather predictable pick, though there is value at these odds.

Jerry Pate to win 33/1 e.w. @ Bet365, William Hill and Ladbrokes
It has taken some time for Pate to look very competitive on this Tour. He did lose out on the Senior PGA Championship via a playoff last year, but he has never really put any form together until this year. Now he can lay claim to a win, a 6th place and a 7th place finish in his last four starts and his 6th place finish looks all week as though it would be a lot higher, but playing in the final group, he played poorly in the opening nine holes on Sunday and never recovered. He did play this course in his Tour rookie season (2004) and finished 27th, but he had yet to finish in the top-10 on Tour and this year will be a different proposition. He did finish 6th in his sole start in Texas last year (SBC Championship) and a similarly high finish is expected this year.

Larry Nelson to win 66/1 e.w. @ Ladbrokes
Adding a fourth play with more bookies offering five places this week andthis event being rather open. And while Nelson may be considered a player past his prime, there has been a marked improvement in his form this season with four top-15 finishes and a 6th place finish last week that would have been a top-5 finish but for a bogey on the final hole. That means he may be more competitive again and it is no accident that it has occurred when the players are allowed to use carts again - Nelson is a player who has struggled more than most with his back. If he is becoming competitive again, then it is a very good time for him to be playing in Texas. Not only is he a former winner of this event (2004), but he has won four times on this Tour in Texas since 2000 and finished 2nd on one other occasion, from a total of 12 starts in that period. That's an impressive record in the Lone Star State.

Matchup plays (2pts each):

Mike Sullivan to beat Bob Charles -140 @ Five Dimes
Strange matchup. Sullivan is a regular on this Tour and even though he is not the most competitive player, he did finish 15th in the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in February, whereas Charles has yet to make an appearance on Tour this season and his last top-30 finish was back in 2004. Needless to say, Sullivan has prevailed in five of their last six common events, so deserves to be a stronger favourite.

Mark Lye to beat Bill Longmuir +102 @ Five Dimes
Will side with the part-timer in this matchup. Longmuir gained eligibility to play on this Tour via the Q-School last year, but has a best finish of only 46th in eight Champions Tour starts. Lye, by contrast, finished higher than that in his sole start this year and has performed much better over the last few years even though he now devotes more time to being an analyst on the Golf Channel. With course experience also in his favour, Lye is certainly the wrong player to have as the underdog in this match.

Larry Nelson to beat Ben Crenshaw -110 @ The Greek
This is a price based on Crenshaw's Masters performance and that is something he has not really been able to replicate on this Tour. He has finished ahead of Nelson just once in the last six months and has finished behind Nelson in each of the three years that they have played this course; on the last two occasions, the winning margins have been nine and ten shots respectively. Nelson certainly warrants further support this week with this matchup.

Outrights:

Larry Nelson(66/1)(1/4 for 1-2-3-4-5) e.w @ GolfingGods
- - Last year I was an interested spectator of this event because of my wager on Jim Thorpe. Both my notes and recollection from then feature references in the television commentary that because of the contours of the fairways, huge advantages were being gained by Thorpe while playing with Wayne Levi because Thorpe was in a righteous zone of shaping and bombing tee shots as opposed to popping pea shooter fades into play . . . 2004 champion Larry Nelson would probably rate gaining an advantage with his driving as the strength of his game at this time, so I'll stick with him again from last week. Unfortunately, adept scrambling around some very well protected greens and/or precise short iron play is also a big part of the mix from my notes and recollection regarding The Hills CC, and from what I saw, shortcomings in scrambling (albeit from around fairly massive greens in Savannah) is what kept me from cashing my ticket on Nelson last week.

Saturday:

Kite(-105) over Stadler @ 5dimes

- - Sloppiness on my part is the only excuse for missing the 80/1 play on David Edwards (I don't have all afternoon to berate myself properly), which regardless of the final outcome, annoys me at least three times twice as much as my hurt on plays in any sport that snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Outrights - FINAL RESULT: 0-4; -8.00pts

Hatalsky 36th
Bryant 11th
Pate 17th
Nelson 19th

No much hope in this event with three players shooting 74 or over in the first round. The remaining player, Hatalsky, had been at the top of the leaderboard for much of the first round, but slipped down towards the end of the round and then shot 78 on Saturday to end any hopes in this market.

Matchups - FINAL RESULT: 2-1; +1.84pts

Sullivan/Charles WON by 12
Lye/Longmuir WON by 2
Nelson/Crenshaw LOST by 3

Small profit to offset the losses on the outrights. Still a very poor event overall.
