My grandfather flew in the Lancaster during WWII. He was shot down over Berlin 69 years ago. All his crew died except for him and one other. He was captured by the Nazi's and put in POW camp, he escaped and found his way to freedom. He never spoke to anybody about the war so it is kind of cool to see the plane he flew in fly the skies in 2015:scared

Take 6 minutes out of your day and watch the video, seeing that plane in the sky is really cool to see.

Outstanding!! 800 at a time would depart at night with no lights and no communication on bombing runs to Germany, and the armada would be 10 miles wide and 30 miles long

That's incredible!

Thanks for the video, Kickserv; I really enjoyed it!

And yes that story about no lights, no communication was nuts:scared All I know about my grandfather was he did 19 runs in the same Lancaster plane before he got shot down, man that must have been scary as fuck in pitch black flying over Germany:scared

One other thing I forgot to mention, before my Grandfather died he actually flew in that plane you see in the video. It was back in the late 1990's, he wouldn't say a word to any of us about what he was thinking, he stayed totally silent the entire time, no clue what was going through his head, but regardless it was cool to see him get one more chance to fly in a Lancaster.

I actually regret not asking him about what he was thinking, but he refused to ever talk about WWII so I left him alone.

Just watched this excellent docu. Beautifully filmed, they also interview several WWII Lancaster vets

my dad (age 90 now) was a Merchant Marine in WWII, served on several ships, and a couple Liberty Ships. They built almost 3000 of these Liberty cargo ships, only 3 are operational today - and one of those, the Jeremiah O'Brien, my dad took a tour on a few years back. It is a museum ship in San Francisco, but it did steam to France for the 50th Anniversary of Operation Overlord, "D-Day"...The Jeremiah O'Brien was the only large ship from the original Normandy flotilla to return for the 50th Anniversary....my dad remarked a few times how small the quarters and mess seem today, he mentioned names of some of his mates, but didn't tell any stories...
