Paul LaPolice played good coach/bad coach this week when it came to Alexis Serna.
The 25-year-old placekicker has made only five of nine field goal attempts this season, and two of his whiffs have been returned for touchdowns. The one that Toronto?s Chad Owens took to the house last Friday led to the Argos? 36-34 victory.
LaPolice, therefore, had to lay down the law on Monday before playing more of a supportive role on Tuesday and Wednesday.
?The first day I told him we gotta be better, and then the last two days I tried to pump the kid up and coach him and make him be a good kicker,? LaPolice said.
The coach spent time with Serna as the latter kicked field goals at the end of practice the last two days.
?I tried to hear what he had to say and tried to build into the guy again, because he?s our kicker right now and it?s my job to make him kick better,? LaPolice said.
RUNNIN? IT: Fred Reid believes good things are ahead for the Bomber run game.
Quarterback Buck Pierce has a 192 to 125 rushing yards lead on Reid through two weeks, but the tailback isn?t embarrassed by that fact.
?It?s coming,? Reid said. ?That was just the first two games. We?ve got 16 more to go. We?ve been working on a lot of stuff to get the run game going more, and we?ve been working hard at it, and it?s going to come. We gotta be patient with it.?
LaPolice said earlier in the week that Reid has to be more patient when hitting his holes at the line of scrimmage. Reid supports that theory.
?That makes a lot of sense,? he said. ?I?ve been evaluating myself, and I see exactly what coach has been talking about. Slow to the hole, and then I can just hit my burst as soon as I find my hole.
?That?s something I?ve been working on this week in practice.?
TOUGH TEXAN: Recently arrived import defensive back Deon Beasley, a Texas Longhorn product, was once carried off the field on a stretcher during a college game, rushed to the hospital, then returned before the match was over but did not return to play.
?It was an interesting thing,? recalled the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Orange, Texas, native. ?Somebody caught me (from the side) while I was looking at the football. It won?t happen again.
?I had a concussion, it was nothing major. I did come back to the sidelines but I didn?t play. They had cut my shoes off and they had cut my jersey off so I couldn?t get back in. I?ve still got that cut-up jersey.?
Beasley, 22, can also return kicks.
LATE HITS: It looks like the Bombers will be making three roster changes this week. Safety Ian Logan (hamstring) and defensive tackle Dorian Smith (knee) are both out. Linebacker Derrick Doggett, returner Markus Howell and defensive tackle Moton Hopkins will go in. Another import will have to come off as well ? LaPolice hopes to have defensive back Alex Suber (hamstring) and fullback Daryl Stephenson (groin) back for next Saturday?s game against Edmonton.
