Watched the 1st 2 parts of Last dance its pretty good... never realized how Pippin was so under paid ...there was a scene in part 1 or 2 when Bobby Knight says " he's the best player ever". It reminded me of a Bobby Knight clinic in Poughkeepsie NY a year after the 84' Olympics I told this story years ago here but I'm sure no one is still alive or remembers it..
It was a Bobby Knight weekend clinic .. a 9 hour clinic either Champion or converse ran it... Friday night 3 hours in Poughkeepsie HS auditorium and saturday morning and afternoon in the gym . Imagine 9 hours of just Bobby Knight..I have here in my condo in Austin filled with boxes of unopened notes from my attic in NY ...it will take me years to go thru all my boxes and notes so am doing this from memory...if someone could find my post from years ago it should be the same ...

there were 3 stories I remember ...his opening speech Knight starts out with ,me giving Knight a personal message and he stops talking to about 8 or 9 coaches all surrounding him and talks to me.... and his actual clinic friday night

Maybe will come back here and tell the other 2 stories if anybody is still awake
But when Knight said that about Jordan it just reminded me of that clinic I told my wife sitting on the couch watching the show but she was on her computer playing " candy crush"and probably didn't hear one thing I said
So here goes

The clinic started out on a funny moment and that is story No 1..{this is story 2 }he started out by talking about his 1984 Olympic basketball team he told the maybe 500-600 coaches about his team.. He asked us to imagine his 84 team is in front of him as he looked down at his imaginary team on the stage.. and before he starts taking to them he stops.. looks sideway and yell Barkley" your late and I don't need your fat ass on this team " now Barkley refutes this about not making the team ..but wow what a way to start... he goes on to say " there are only 2 types of basketball players " shit shovelers and aristocrats ...this team was picked by me and I have 9 shit shovelers and one aristocrat .. then he looks down on his imaginary players and pretends to be talking to Michael Jordan.. he tells Jordan you are the aristocrat..you haven't set a screen or pick for Dean Smith in 3 years at north Carolina and looks over to Sam Perkins another NC graduate ...and raises his eye brows ..Micheal as of today you are a shit shoveler .. I ain't no dean Smith ..ask Alford who was on the team an
played for knight at Indiana ...I don;t have all my notes but I was entertained and enjoying of knights act he went on to say Jordan would be a complete player once he starting shoveling ...
I remember Woods as the pt gd Knight loved him also Alvin Robertson from Ark tough defenders on the ball Think he got on Mullins case from St Johns ..think Tisdale was on the team and he said something like that is a shit shoveler

anyway Last dance reminded me of that story so I thought I would share with you guys again ..since my wife was so into her candy crush game
if anyone is interested would tell the other 2 stories that night.. the friday night clinic was more entertaining..saturday in the gym was more x's and O's My friend coached the Poughkeepsie HS team and none those kids wanted to come back to the afternoon show because Knight was brutal to them in them in the morning session uh oh that is story number 4

jas and kod will tell the stories later but last night got a text from a good friend of mine that Joe D died of the c-19 virus .. JD was a high school basketball coach at Malboro HS then he coached at Ulster and Orange CC...he finally retired to see his grandchildren play their high school sports
He was a close personal friend for 40 years,an opponent who went head to head with me on the basketball court and in our basketball coaches circle I didn't know he was in the hospital fighting this virus for the past 3 weeks ..just out of the blue you get a text that he's dead .. the local paper did a nice tribute to him today I have over 50 Joe D's stories ..think head to head I was maybe 4-2 ..but his teams were physical and so well coached ..the 3 times I was in the final 4 in Glen Falls he sat among 5 or 6 of my fellow coaches sitting court side.. I remember in the opening game we are playing Bishop G from Syracuse . they are 25-1 and there 6'7 Lithuanian star has already signed with Syracuse .. during the warm ups before the game all my fellow coaches are on the sidelines giving me last minute advice.. So I ask them when we go back into the lockeroom why don't all you guys come in and say something to my team all my kids know you guys since they played against you.. So my team leaves the warm ups and goes into our lockeroom . Each of my friends says something encouraging to my players.. then Joe D who has a fu manchu mustache kicks a chair in the middle of the room on the floor . it startles my team including me.. then he goes off " get every loose ball on the floor get every rebound.play that man defense and help defense know where the Lithuanian is and help Alex{ alex was going to gd that kid}
I think my kids were sky high when the coaches left esp. Joe D's speech ..I never kicked things or threw things as a coach so everybody was shocked ..
we upset Bishop D after being down 8 at the half ,, we won by 6 or 7 pts in the 1st half BG had 5 or 6 uncontested fast break lay ups ..they sent someone down long just as the shot went off My 2 gds were caught penetrating or down low trying to get rebounds . 12 uncontested points.. the entire stadium had to be saying that is the dumbest coach and team we ever saw...even after some time outs we didn't adjust.. when the buzzer went off at halftime we had to pass where my fellow coaches were sitting near the lockeroom ...I know they didn't need to give me any advice ..they basically said : you know what you have to do" But I remember Joe grabbing Alex by the arm and saying " I'm watching you gd that kid and you are locking him down...excellent keep it up .. then Joe yelled at me from behind and said ' box Alex is playing outstanding give him props and can you freak'in keep someone back "..
there were maybe 3,000 to 4,000 people in the stands that day 3/4 was Bishop D fans ...I don't think any of those fans gave us a chance except those 6 or 7 coaches sitting courtside and some loyal fans ..the kid from Syracuse had 20 pts but he didn't hurt us.. Alex really shut him down and about 95% of their offense went thru him

it was a nice comeback win but when I think of that game I think Of joe D..he later told people how he came into my lockeroom and scared the shit out of my team I;m not sure if he had an effect but I believe he did may he rest in peace I pasted what I said in today's s obituary

What a great loss to our area.. Among many of us HS basketball coaches we knew when you played Malboro you were in for a war...such a good coach and made adjustments as the game was played ..a no nonsense coach who was respected by everyone ... a great husband, father and grandfather..thoughts and prayers are with you Cindy and your family.. I'm sure right now he is up there telling St Peter " we should be playing man to man instead of a zone" I can see him now yelling at some angel to get back on defense "
Was proud to have known you as a fellow coach and teacher ..love you

I just re read my post .. there is no Hollywood ending ... we lost the next day in the finals by 5

found this in Joe's obit so many students and former players said something this one was pretty nice

Mr. Detz was my 7th grade Math teacher at Meadow Hill 1980-81. I had him for 45 minutes a day, for only 1 year, and he was, by far, the favorite teacher in my life. Meadow Hill closed 7-8 grade the following year, and he and I went in different directions. The following year, I made the baseball team at North Junior High, and I was thrilled beyond belief when he showed up at one of the games and cheered me on. I played well that day, and I was so pleased that I did, because I wanted Mr. Detz to be impressed. Oh, the things we remember about the people that made an impact on us. I have never forgotten him, and I never will. I am so sorry for your loss, and so thankful that my path crossed his when it did. May he rest in peace.
Bill Campbell, south portland, ME

e had a fiery, competitive spirit in his early coaching days at Marlboro, winning 169 games and one Section 9 title in five championship-game bids, but he mellowed during his college tenure, perhaps appreciating more the opportunities he had been given. He won one regional title at Orange and always had the Colts in contention. He feasted on the relationships he developed but privately confided he wouldn?t have minded winning a few more titles along the way.

?His teams seemed to feed off of his enthusiasm,″ ... said. ?When things weren?t going well, he had to get on them a bit (and) they always seemed to respond.″

McLaud marveled at Detz?s preparation and ability to adapt on the fly. ?The hardest games I coached were against him,″ said McLaud, who coached Detz?s son, Joe, at Wallkill.

DePew, too, admired the same things about Detz.

?One of the things about Joe?s teams is whether they were the best team or they were the worst team, they were going to play hard and they were going to get after it and run their stuff to perfection,″ DePew said. ?He prided himself on his teams running things to perfection.
Box...
the few times I played them I could never use the box and one ..he had his kids prepared for it ...I remember in one of our last games against each other I was up by 15 with a comfortable lead .. he walked over to my bench and asked could I go into a " box" . I said why.. he said " because we worked on it all last week and if we didn;t show it he would look bad because he prepared for it . I obliged and went into a " box". after the game I went into his lockeroom to wish him luck on his next game and say goodbye.. as he was collecting uniforms and looking at stats I wished his team good luck in the sectionals and yelled " the reason why you guys didn't see a box and one until the end tonight is because your coach is the only coach in our section that can beat it". A few weeks later he thanked me for explaining it to his team... but that was the truth.. He had Bell the Atlanta Braves staring future pitcher and another superstar outfielder that played for KC Royals forgot his name ..thank god these were baseball players ,.. there is no funeral due to the C-19 epidemic I pray that he was buried with his clip board and whistle rest in peace Joe..

Last Dance part 3&4
Pretty good.. getting so much press...enjoyed the Pistons-Bulls stories.. I knew there was bad blood and the Pistons were so physical but loved the "Jordan rule " then never remember the Pistons not shaking hands after finally getting beat.. loved Jordan take on it and his response to Isiah Thomas response today.. I like that espn isn't censoring the comments.. the stores about Rodman are great..its a well done documentary and very enlightening...always thought Collins firing was wrong but Jackson coming in was really a great move.. Tex Winter is in a couple of scenes.. he is the greatest mind of any basketball coach ever....Bobby Knight talked about him a lot in his book but no one was so ahead of his time.. the Triangle offense worked perfect for the Bulls when under Tex and Collins, when Jackson coached the Knicks the triangle never worked..and the old adage
"if you have the horses " Jackson sucked when he coached the Knicks ...and his triangle didn't work esp when you have Carmelo Anthony on the team...not taking anything from Jackson because he won and was a good coach in LA and Chicago..but he had the horses on those teams ..
Was really down today .. my aunt who is 95 was admitted into Nyack Hospital with the C-19, .. We sold our house in NY today .. they closed on the house at 1 pm ... after over 31 years in your dream home .. 3 wrap around porches,32 windows ,6 bedrooms, original door and knobs... attic with about 1,800 sq feet and basement the same , cistern under the basement ..all dry.. listed as an historic home.. new owners are going to make it into a bed and breakfast after they get the zoning changed.
So now I have to get my drivers license changed to a Texas one...have already Texas plates on both cars..Guess I have to start cheering for the Cowboys,Astros ,Rangers Spurs and Mavs ...lol.... no way ,its my Giants,Philles
and Knicks ...
I asked Alexia to play Crosby,Stills Nash and Young " Our House" ..I cried listening to it... as of today I an no longer a New Yorker ...think I'm to old to start talking like a Texan.. I promise never ever to say "Ya'll " and pronounce July [ not Jew-lie" }

doglover... Texas just signed the Brown kid ...wow a 5 star but Shacka is still the coach.. hope you are doing well ..praying that my Aunt makes it thru... looking forward to Part 5 and 6 of Last dance..
Hopefully everyone here stays healthy and remains safe ..miss my snow cones here in Austin... damn they make great snow cones here in Texas
We gotta run .. see ya'll soon hopefully .. opps see you guys soon

Long time Box

So You sold the family hacienda and moved to Texas. I hope you have a great time there and I know you will have many friends. Very very sad to hear about your coaching friend and your aunt. This is really a tough one. I'm 73 now and I really can't afford to make a mistake with this virus. I hope you are well and your family also. We are doing real well in Fairfield and I have 4 grand children right up the street (bordering Ffld U) all are into sports so I'm always at their games. My only granddaughter is in Oyster bay and another coming in June. So Box, I enjoyed your tales and have always appreciated your insights into hoops. I'm looking forward to CT hoops this year (IF) as Hurley is getting it done and Geno is loaded. Box, Stay well and be safe! My best always. BEAR

Box, had a chance to read them all through as well. Consider you an internet friend, but also a friend with stories like we are sitting at a bar having our adult beverage of choice. Thank you for everything, hope your 95 year old Aunt survives and lives to tell you stories as well. Enjoy Texas and stay true to your roots, that is the only way, look forward to College baskets next year and some "LOVE games", where I drop more into than I should.

Bear so good to see you thought maybe you fell in the long island sound thank you Mikey wineguy,MJ and Mikey.
Got the call tonight this afternoon.. My aunt passed away today she was put in a nursing home 3 days ago after being in the hospital ...she wasn't allowed visitors for 8 days.. and only 3 people can attend her funeral .. my cousin said they would have something in the fall on her birthday ...
Tomorrow my daughter and 2 grandsons fly back to Philly after being here in Texas for 2 months ..even though Austin is better with my wife and I ,my son and other daughter here she wants to get back I understand .. here husband misses them but the problem is me and Ben my 2 yr old .. I am so attached to him and him to me he is atough 2 yr old with some problems he will be tested in early June for autism Although being in education my whole life I'm not really any expert in autism ..my daughter gets support from Philly councilors and they watch her on video 2 times a week watching her inter act with her but the two of us are so close he sleeps over my house 2 times a week ..everyday he gets a toy I put in my car trunk ...I now know about Paw patrol,Power Rangers and transformers.. I like bumble bee over Megatron .. I know I'm going to cry and cry tomorrow..

watched part 5 and 6 tonite really enjoyed Last dance the Knick game where starks dunks on Jordan will never forget it .. Smith missing the 3 put backs he was fouled but after watching it tonight maybe he wasn;t
But I do remember Starks missing 3 pt shot after shot miss miss miss
all these years I thought the knicks got screwed...re ran the put backs don't think Smith was fouled

so far I know 3 people that have now died from this virus.. boy that sucks .. everyone be careful even though many states are loosening up

old south sent you something let me know when you get it

Old school glad you got it .. its not much for everything you do so again thank you..
Tough day today My daughter from Philly has been down here for 2 months.. she has Ben my buddy who is 2 and a half and Sam who is just 8 months old ..thought the airport separation was going to be worst but when my daughters hugged each by the car they wouldn't let go of each other crying that's all I needed .. after being a ref had to almost separate them Ben kept saying he will be back on Sunday ..TSA after reviewing my daughters copy of her divers license since she lost her wallet finally allowed her to go thru TSA ...they just landed in Philly. American airlines 10 people were on the plane ... I secretly packed some treats for Ben .. I have been sneaking a few treats to him everyday.. its our secret I packed 3 chocolate raisinets,2 gummie worms and a small pixie stick.. I know the pixie sticks are nothing but slightly favored sugar but they are the small pixie sticks ...grandpa's are allowed a little treat but don't do it to much because of the sugar.. so tomorrow morning at 9 when I go over and get him he's not there... wow tomorrow is when I lose it ...he has been my medicine and partner for the past 2 months ..but when this virus is all done will go to Philly this summer and spend a month or two ..there..
wineguy.. your right .. have known so many of you here in MJ's .. imagine many of us all sitting around a bar telling stories ...we all come from different backgrounds but have one thing in common ..we are all fools but love sports ...my dream in life is still buying something in the Caymons and sitting right on a beach over looking to the ocean..and looking at my laptop capping Rider vs Manhattan at -5 now Rider last year beat them by 11 and Manhattans star player is ............
I guess we have to wait till next year everyone be careful out there

Last dance is really good . I know its getting a lot of hype but I'm enjoying it . I remember some of it like Pippin refusing to go in But Michael was a warrior...I like his line " i never asked anybody to do what I hadn't done before " that was pretty powerful talk about about an ego Don't cross him..you paid a price for that ...with BJ and Karl...
love the un edited stuff liked the Kerr fight .. enjoying this series

We sold our house in NY.. found out the new owners are both Broadway performers.. The lead singer in" Phantom of the Opera" He has performed on Broadway for 12 years 8 with Phantom ...I have been telling everybody here in Texas Andrew Loyd Weber bought our house .. had to check with Alexia i he was still alive ..

My daughter went back to Philly and I miss my 2 yr old grandson ...I thought by taking him for 3-4 hours everyday I was helping my daughters and wife ..but I soon realized he was my medicine in these times

Behind my daughters house there is a 2 mile trail for walking .its is a concrete side walk with thousands and thousands of rocks on each side.. So for the past month people are painting the rocks with different color and inspirational sayings .. its pretty cool. My granddaughter has about 6 or 7 of her own rocks painted out there,, so the other day I took about 6 or 7 rocks and painted them red and blue the NY giants colors . My grand daughter is going to put the NY in blue and red on them..will set them along the trail I wonder if people will see them and chuck them in the woods ...My wife says the people of Texas would never do that.. I told her if you had a trail like that in NY with Dallas Cowboys rocks painted they would be gone.. My wife says you don't give us Texans any credit .. so tomorrow will put my rocks out and wait a day or two .. I predict of the 6 NY blue and red rocks will be gone .. I know if those rocks were Oklahoma or Tex AM rocks they would be gone ..will wait and see..
hope everyone had a nice Mothers day...

will just write here so I don't waste any posts spots
I bought draftking stocks last week DKNG is the over the counter letters I had a feeling it was a good stock .. it opened up at +16 I bought it at 17.5 per share it closed today at 26...not into buying stocks esp now with the economy but just the fantasy aspect alone had me interested.. I have an account in fantasy football and baseball Think I put in about $400 a year or two ago.. Think I have about $250 left I play head to head, join small groups with 8 to 10 players .. sometimes play those huge games with unreal jack pots ..so just the fantasy part has me interested.. then they started on line gambling as some states legalized it .. New Jersey made draftking there on line gambling in sports, and casinos
Just think with so many people starving for sports and gambling draftking might take off .. so far its looking good but its way to early.. you have people betting on darts in Russia,South Korean and Tawian baseball

Baseball and the NFL are talking about starting even with out fans ..fantasy should be looking good and thats not even talking about gambling on these games ...I even bet on the UFC boxing and wrestling match saturday night I won because i took the under dog .. I have never watched a match in my life I;m so old school I want boxing ..but I must admit it was pretty good

Not telling anybody to buy the stock but since we are all in this field ..think somewhat doesn't that give is an advantage most of us know everyone is starving...its just my opinion I am not recommending stocks to anybody I will recommend you take Rider -6 over Manhattan though :mj07: just kidding
My daughter here in austin bought 100 shares at 23.. my other daughter said "no way Dad" you still think the Phillies will win the pennant..
My wife is so conservative and was upset that I opened up an account at E-trade ..
I just hope next thanksgiving we are all sitting at the table and I'm saying wow Draftking hit 100 today.. and smile .. or whose idea was that, thanks dad as its at $3 a share..
or maybe come back here at MJ's and say " I told you guys" or " hope no one read my thread hidden in a last dance post ..
take rider -6 .. Manhattan.. Jaspers top player is out and Rider will play zone and Manhattan is the worst outside shooting team in the MAAC
or

Take Igor Rasputin -2 over Vladimer Beeznevf in table tennis.. Igor has the better backhand

just read some of my past posts.. sorry for the poor spelling and grammar...that is why as a principal I had my secretary read all my messages sent out to my teachers..

Last Dance part 9 and 10 wow I really liked it . So much talk radio on it everyday.. Thought Jordan overall came off as a good guy even though he had thin skin and was a bully..loved the inner stories behind the scenes..
Miss my grandson big time.. all the time I thought I was doing everyone a favor taking him for few hours ..but realized he was taking care of me...

Texas has opened up almost everything .. Barber shops, malls, gyms, restaurants etc ..my racquetball buddies who I meet in a parking lot on fridays are not going to resume for awhile.. still going to play it safe since the C-19 is still spiking here...I know the economy is hurting but at my age I think I'm a higher risk.. plus I know of 3 people in NY that have passed away from it..my aunt who was 95 and lived a good life .. But Joe D was my age a teacher and a basketball coach ...

Draftking closed at 29.2 on friday up +3.92...damn ..think this stock will continue to go up since today I bet on the darlington 400 I know nothing about NASCAR...you can bet on charity golf,Korean baseball and Taiwan basketball .. I actually watched basketball .. these guys are good ...I recognized Bueller the 7'4 kid from N Mex St..

was thinking about buying some more shares even though it went up to 29 without any betting going on .. think in the next couple of weeks when you can wager on more leagues and teams think draftking is going up and up and wait till fantasy teams start ...I know someone who bought it at 16 when it opened 2 weeks ago and is going to sell all of it at 30...I'm not recommending it to anyone but you should at least google it and do your own homework ..its something that many of us here are familiar with ...that would be the only advantage that we have playing fantasy and wagering..

there was no play by play and Taiwan nickname was Beer..
