Missou, so sorry to hear. The most important part is to find out what type of leukemia your kid has. The prognosis varies greatly from one end of the spectrum to the other. I'm not a pediatrician, but leukemia is leukemia, whether it's in an adult or a child. Let me know if you have any Q's. Leukemia is a nasty disease, but it certainly isn't a death sentence. Hang in there.

My heart, and best wishes go out to you and your family, certainly not the news you want to hear on New Year's eve.

Thanks for the kind words. It seems like cancer affects everyone's life. We have a long, rough road ahead of us but we'll make it. It just doesn't make any sense to give anyone, especially a 2 year old, cancer.

Thanks for the prayers.

Mizzou, I had a first cousin who had leukemia. She ended up being treated at St. Jude's in Memphis. That was over 20 years ago and I know that this area of medicine has advanced much further since then. A good friend of mine had a daughter diagnosed with a brain tumor and the doctor's gave her less than 25% chance at age 5. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class 2 years ago. Never give up.

I just spoke with a nurse at St. Jude's in Memphis. She said that if this was the 1960's, his chance of survival would be 4%. Now it's 80%. Thank God for cancer research.

My wife was diagnosed with acute myelogenous luekemia the last Saturday before Thanksgiving. She was admitted that day and spent over a month in the hospital undergoing chemo.

She is now home and is said to be in complete remission.. altho further chemo is planned. She is feeling great and looking good.

Thanks to the support of friends and family we are pulling through this. It has been TOUGH staying strong and not cratering under all the stress.

I will keep you in my prayers. Have faith in your doctors and do maintain a positive mental attitude. A bit of hysteria about this is normal and to be expected.

I feel good about the prognosis for your son. And want you to know that we are here for you if you need us.

Love and prayers

Sorry to hear the news-especially about a child--but on the bright side-you said it yourself. The survival rate is 80%. Hell the people thrive on this site to go 52% So those odds are right there on your side!!!
We will be praying for your family and may this next year be the best!!

Don't know ya, but that means little when I hear something such as this. I will certainly be puttin' your child in my prayers as well as the rest of my family. I have two young children so I can somewhat sympathize with the terrible feelings you must be having. I would make damn sure the diagnosis is correct, and you might even want to think about getting a 2nd opinion. It can't hurt, especially if you have health insurance which I pray you do.

Lots of wonderful children hospitals across the country, and I would certainly look into finding one if the demographics are feasible. Once the doctors have specifically diagnosed the disease, I would start my research by surfing the world wide web. In a few months, you should know just as much as your doctor, so you'll know what you and your wife are up against. Become an expert in your child's disease. Become as educated as possible so you'll know what to expect through this whole process.

I can think of nothing worse than something happening to one of my children, and I can't imagine what you all are going through during the holiday season. The odds are stacked in your favor, and you all should think positively about the difficult road you're gonna go down. I'm certain everything will work out in the end, and I will certainly put your child in my prayers....

We just did get a second opinion. We called St. Jude in Memphis. They knew our doctor. He had worked at St. Jude's and Mayo's before coming here. They said that this doctor is one of the best that they know of. They said if it would make us feel better, we could send Grant's records to them and they'd have a physician look at them.

We're off to the hospital. Thanks for the prayers and your concern.

Mizzou I hope all goes well for you and your family. This is a dificult time for you. Keep your faith and always ask for that second opinon. Someone said it above. Seems cancer touches so many. I found that out to. And have seen it talked about here now many times. There are things that can help beside Doctors. Your hospital should have a support center. Use it. Good Luck.

Hey Mizzou and Family,

I am so very sorry to hear about your son but would like to share a little experience.
Very good friend and colleague received the same news about his daughter 8 years ago....Ya wanna talk about strong faith....I NEVER saw either husband or wife in a down or negative moment....Faith in God and prayer..you would not believe...One treatment to the next and results all negative.....no donor match...for bone marrow
etc. WELL, all of a sudden a donor was found
and the transplant was a success and that little doll is just fine today! Since then treatments have improved drastically...Never underestimate the power of prayer as I know you wont....God Bless you and your family
Stay Strong ....and our prayers are with you!
