I think Leyland believes in the guy and this was his best chance to let him come in and get his confidence back. All he had to do was get 3 outs before giving up 4 runs...... No dice. This is where Leyland needs to tell Valverde thanks, but no more.

By the way, I have said it hundreds of times: The concept of the closer is flawed at best. Stick with the guy that is getting outs. As already pointed out, Coke looked good and was mowing people down. Why not let him keep going? WHY FUCK WITH IT!?
