Today's tidbits...

WILMINGTON - Overall, Bruins first-year coach Robbie Ftorek likes what his team has been doing. They are 15-8-3-3, in second place in the Northeast Division. They have had two three-game winning streaks and two two-game losing streaks - no periods that were especially good or especially bad.

''The team's really doing some nice things, always asking questions when we might not fully understand things,'' said Ftorek. ''There have been a couple of suggestions, with one player telling us how we might be able to break out of our zone better on the power play, and I've been pleased about that.

''The team's working hard, following the game plan from practice into each outing. We have to make sure to go up the sides of the rink rather than up the middle. We have to make sure we use the boards more.''

They're hurting

Hal Gill, who has missed two games with shoulder tendinitis, skated at yesterday's practice. ''His timing was off, though, just a bit,'' Ftorek said. Sergei Samsonov(leg), injured in Atlanta Dec. 2, did not practice, however. He also has missed the last two games. Mike Knuble(back), who has missed the last seven games, skated yesterday, but it doesn't appear he'll be ready for tomorrow's game at Pittsburgh. ''Mike hasn't gotten the green light,'' Ftorek said ... With four assists in the last six games, defenseman Nick Boynton seems to have become more relaxed in his play. Boynton is now second among defensemen on the team with 5 points (one goal, four assists), just behind Gill, who has 6 points (one goal, five assists) ... The Bruins are looking to improve on their last performance against Pittsburgh, a 4-1 loss last Thursday at the FleetCenter. ''We just didn't play the entire 60 minutes,'' said Ftorek, ''and we have to make sure we stay out of the penalty box as well. We have to make sure our intensity is up for this game.'' ... There was a full scrimmage yesterday, as well as a four-on-four and shooting drills ... There will be a free autograph session with Martin Lapointe Sunday at the Bruins' Pro Shop from 12:30-1:30 p.m. ...
