On Saturday, coach Mark Gottfried?s basketball team was atop the Southeastern Conference?s West Division standings and ranked No. 14 in the nation entering a game with rival Auburn.
The problem was, the game was played at Auburn, and the Tigers emerged with a 59-56 win.
It was only the latest in a long, disheartening string of road failures in the Gottfried era. Counting Saturday?s defeat, Alabama (14-3, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) dropped to 2-23 in three-plus seasons of SEC road games under Gottfried.
Alabama has won 17 consecutive games inside its Coleman Coliseum and is 27-1 in its past 28 games there.
Over that same stretch on the road, the Tide is 3-25, with the only victories coming over Purdue last season in the NIT quarterfinals, at LSU last January and at Arkansas in the 1999-2000 season.
