i dont know a damn thing about the internal specifics of computers, but i recently bought a toshiba 'satellite' and am very, very happy with it. was looking at the sony vaios but after speaking candidly with the guy at compusa, he said that youre paying more for the sony name than anything else with their laptops.

I have a Dell Inspirion 600m and would reccomend that. Work also gave me a Dell Latitude D600 which is basically the same as my 600m as far as I can tell. I have had 1 service call on my 600m in 2 yrs and they came to my house in 2 days and fixed it in 30 mins. I like the customer support with Dell personally and they have very competitive prices IMO. Either way you go definately get a laptop they're the present and future of computers

I cant believe no one has mentioned HP. We bought Dells in the past for our sales reps, they just kept having problems. Short battery life, getting hot in normal environments. Ram Modules going bad, hard-drive corruptions(3 in a row). Switched to HP 2 years ago and all is well, and the price is right. We even buy the refurbs if they have what we want. I currently have a dv1000 with a 1.7 and 512 of Ram. Love the thing, blazingly fast (twice the speed of my old dell. 14.1 inch widescreen. Small Light and has dvdrw dual layer. AND the battery lasts about 4-5 hours. I have watched 2 dvds on it without being plugged in on flights. It cost 1200 last year but I am sure you could find comparable in the 900 range.

I was forced to buy an IBM Crappad (thinkpad) for 3 grand from school and it's an absolute piece of crap, system board has died on me 4 times in 3 years. I would stay away from the thinkpad.

I agree 100% with in the blues praise of the HP notebooks. We have owned 3 in our family with no problems at all.
