I have followed this board for a year now, and finally started posting last week. I actually won my biggest bet of the year last sat. with USC +3 over CU. (40-3) I had $1000 on USC and i have another big play (Auburn +1 over MSU) Thur. which i plan on betting $500 on. I don't bet nearly this much every week, but only when i see great matchups like i see this thur. Not as strong as my USC bet but close. Hopefully i can get other cappers opinions on this game as well and maybe they can find something to help or go against my play that i did not see.

I have done a lot of research on this game, and as a bonus, i have seen Auburn (live) play USC this year. Here is a long write-up i did, and you can make an informed decision based on my info.

Auburn defense: overall defense based on team speed, and there LB are very fast (top 5 in nation). D-Line is very good at stopping the run, but have not been getting great pass rush on QB's. Secondary is average but have not given up any big pass plays in 3 games.

Auburn offense: Strength is their running game. They have a great RB in Carnell (Cadilac) Williams. He is very fast and strong and is the best RB in SEC and top 10 in country. Their QB Cobb is a 5th year senior but is a very average QB. Passing game is not nearly as strong as their running game.

Miss. St. offense: Hard to tell how good their offense is. They were without their starting QB against Oregon, and he played agains division 1aa JSU. He started off poorly going 0-5, but had a great 2nd half. He is accurate and also threw some long passing plays. But remember this was a 1aa team he did this against. There weakness is their offensive line. Their O-Line could not run block at all. Very poor run blocking but they are good at pass blocking. MSU RB is a very average/poor RB.

MSU defense: Usually MSU has great defense but not his year. They let Oregon score at will, running and passing. Against JSU there D-Line struggled stopping the run. JSU only rushed 169 yards because the MSU DB's came up and made tackles which helped a lot. MSU D-Line also has trouble getting pressure on the QB, and got ZERO sacks against JSU. JSU moved the ball against MSU and was compeitive in the 1st half. Midway 2nd quarter MSU was winning 19-13, but MSU won the game 51-13.

Auburn wins this game because games are won in the trenches. MSU weakness is ther 0-line and D-line. Auburn will be able to run against MSU and their run game will set up the passing game. Since MSU cannot put pressure on the QB, Cobb should have no problem with the very little passing he will have to do in this game. I think AU can still run successfully if MSU stacks 8 in the box and Cobb should be capable of burning them with the pass. MSU will not be able to run, and they have a terrible O-Coordinator who will try and run and play smash mouth football. MSU only success will be passing and they will test the AU secondary. WIthout a running game, i do not see MSU putting up a lot of points, especially if AU can run the ball and eat up the clock.

In addition to that, Miss. St. is a VERY undisciplined team. They always lead SEC in penalties and look for them to easily record over a 100 yards in penalties. Especially stupid penalities (roughing passer and personal fouls). MSU cannot beat a good AU team if they make penalties.

After visiting the each teams message boards, i came away with this: Auburn fans are confident in beating Miss. St. and want to make an impression on the nation. They want to be ranked in the top 25 badly. Miss. St. fans were very disspointed in their first 2 games, and think they will need to make major improvements to beat Auburn. AU fans want and think they are at least a top 25 team, and MSU fans hope they will finish season @ or above 500. FInished 3-8 last year. MSU beat Auburn last 2 years, and AU gave MSU last years game on a silver platter with key Turnovers. Hopefully MSU returns the favor this year, but AU will not need to rely on TO's to win the game.

Miss. St. has one advantage and that is they are playing at home. AU travelled across the country and were very competitive against the #11 ranked Trojans. Miss. St. played @Oregon and got routed. Auburn has played 3 games this year and looked good in all 3. MSU played 2 games, and looked terrible against Oregon and did not dominate a 1aa team. AU played tougher opponents and will be ready for this game.

On special team AU has one of the best kickers in nation in Duval. Miss. St. had poor special teams in both their games, especially on special team coverage. Maybe AU gets a punt/kickoff return? MSU certainly won't with Duval kicking!

Auburn wins this game between 7-17pts, depending how well AU QB Cobb plays. He does not make costly mistakes but is not a real threat in passing the ball. Fans are real high on Miss. St. QB but I look for him to have some trouble against this very fast AU defense. Hopefully AU brings pressure on MSU Qb like he has not seen this year. (he played against 1aa team)

Auburn 26
MSU 13

Good luck in choosing your games this week, and if I had to choose the best game of week, it def. would be this one. I saw USC+3 against CO, and jumped all over it. I see similar situation here. Wrong team favored, and AU should be at least 7pt favorites even though they are on the road. MSU tough place to play, but AU will be fine. Auburn wins in close game or a blowout. Thats exactly what i said about USC and USC won 40-3!

Definitely a good writeup.

Auburn always has problems with Miss. St., especially on the road. It is always tough to travel in the SEC on the road and on a Thursday night.

I think Auburn should win this game, but being alumni I have seen Auburn year in and year out lose a game that they should win, and it always seems we lose to one of the Mississippi schools. If Cobb doesn't lose this game for Auburn, then they should be allright. He is liable to throw for four interceptions though. I do think you are on the right side and good luck, I will be with you.:p

Excellent writeup Scott. Leaning toward Miss St. here, but need to look into further.

A couple comments from your post:

Miss St. QB Fant started the last 2 games last year vs Miss and BYU. They beat Miss and lost to then unbeaten BYU by 3. In those games he went 34-49 for 609 yards and 4 TD's and 1 INT. His rating those 2 plus the Jax St. game is 201.9. Granted the Auburn defense much better than those 3, but impresive numbers still.

In their loss to Oregon, the Ducks played from a short field most of the game. Their scoring drives were 80, 38, 61, 37, 47, 2 and 36 yards. Turnovers put them in this situation, but they did force 3 field goals from those drives.

Auburn didn't dominate Vandy that badly...only outgaining them by 71 yards with 4 more first downs. The weather I'm sure was a factor though.

Good analysis!!

One good reason not the play Auburn...............Jackie Sherill at Home ....one of the best coaches in the SEC...record stand at 175-101-4 in 24 years of coaching....Plus Tuberville looked bad playing a small offense and defense Vanderbilt line....I'm not impressed...and Auburn isn't known to have a favorable ATS...best of luck

Auburn has been using a vanilla offense and defense against their first 3 OOC opponents. Tuberville even said in press conference that he doesn't put too much emphasis into OOC games. All he cares about is SEC play and winning the SEC.

The new Auburn offensive coordinator has been studying the MSU defense all summer in preparation for this game. If Auburn loses this game, it hurts their chances in sec championship. A MUST WIN FOR AU!

P.S. MSU defense is not very good!

Line at Olympic has gone to Auburn -2

Seems everyone is thinking as we are, scares me, I hate being on the public sides of games, making me think twice now about Auburn play.

Will probably wait to see, might be a good contrairian play for me.

How is the value in MSU? Auburn is clearly the better team and should win. If Miss. St. D-Line struggled against a 1aa opponent against the run, and has looked inconsistent all year, what will they do against a good rushing team (AU) and an awesome RB in Carnell Williams?

Games are won in the trenches, and AU has all the advantage in the D-lines and O-lines. Only concern for me is how well the AU secondary will play against the MSU passing attack. MSU will NOT be able to run against the AU defense and that should put a lot of pressure on the MSU QB who has just played one game this year and against 1aa team. In addition, MSU O-Coordinator is supposed to be terrible and might try and play smash mouth football, advantage AU!

As long as Auburn doesn't make costly mistakes, look for AU to controll the line of scrimmage and win in the 2nd half. MSU defense should be on the field all day and get worn out in 2nd half. The MSU D-Coordinator does NOT have the talent to play his style of defense. 3 DL and 4-5 LB, will NOT work against AU rushing attack. Hopefully if they bring pressure, Cobb will dump off to TE and burn them. Cobb will be key in this game and he is 50/50 in being productive.

msu oline and dline are very good.there big and msu is always a very conditioned team. auburn lost to usc because they wore down in the second half. in all 3 games production fell off for them. a sign of a team not well conditioned. msu has a very good run d. and a under rated experienced qb.msu will pressure the ball with there quick line and as usc showed you pressure the qb he makes poor decisions. i wish you the best of luck but i will be on msu. on the ml. welcome to the forum.

"Auburn has been using a vanilla offense and defense against their first 3 OOC opponents."

Technically, Vanderbilt is still a member of Auburn's conference.

"Auburn is clearly the better team and should win."

How do you figure that? MSU has won 4 of the last 5, and the one loss was by 2 points. Head coaches are the same (though Auburn changed coordinators) and no wholesale personnel changes since last year, so your claim is dubious. Auburn MAY be the better team, but there's little basis for saying it's "clear" -- unless you're close to Auburn's program and know things that aren't public knowledge.

Tell me -- why is Auburn better this year? Why is State worse than it has been over the last 5 years?

Question

Question

Scott, I agree with your play on Auburn. I follow the SEC very closely and can't see the Bulldogs pulling this one out, much as they'd love to. They just don't have the weapons to exploit Auburn's weaknesses.

I have a question on your liking Louisville -26 over Army. Can you give a rationale why you like them in this spot? I can't see Louisville being worked up to go up to West Point and lay a licking on the Cadets after just playing their hearts out in a comeback at Colorado State -- especially with a Thursday nighter coming up with FSU. I agree it is an easy win for them, but will they really cover the spread? Just my thoughts, and I'd like to hear yours.

I will tell you why I like Louisville, and I have not really researched it too much. I just really liked it when i first saw the line and jumped on it. I really researched the AU game a lot more in depth. But here are some reasons.....
Jeff Sagarin computer ratings
44 Louisville A = 76.29
199 Army A = 38.70

171 Rutgers A = 47.63 (Beat Army 44-0)

Army also lossed to 1aa school Holy Cross L 21-30

Plain and simple, Army is a very very bad team. Army only shot to win a game this year was against Rutgers and they lossed big time. Louisville would beat Army playing their 2nd string players.
Louisville has a decent defense, beter against the run, and should be able to shut out Army.

Army is having QB problems, and they turn the ball over at least 2-3 times a game. (Too many Fumbles and INT's)

Louisville QB Ragone is great QB who will use this game to pad his statistics. Don't even worry about a back door cover because Louisville 2nd/3rd string players should be able to score against Army.

Louisville will the the toughest team Army faces all year, and that even scares me because Rutgers is one of the worst division 1a schools and they killed Army!

When Army played Rutgers, they were playing for who would not finish last in division 1a :p

Louisville wins 47-7

My opinion on Ms St. Fant is a good young qb. They have a good O-line. Receivers are questionable, can make the great catch, but are not dependable. Will have a decent running game. The "D" is not up to par. I love Joe Lee Dunn and his attitude but everyone is onto his defensive schemes. He uses an zone blitz, and someone is dogging on almost every play. This leaves the secondary in man cover too much. If you get to the qb this is great, but last year, and so far this year this has not happend. The Dawgs have always prided themselves on playing hard-nosed football. This to the extent that they are always contending for the conference crown in aggressive penalties. The hardnose attitude also usually leaves them lacking in their kicking game. (Did anyone notice that when Florida St. finally missed enough extra points and field goals, Bowden FINALLY recruited a dependable kicker.) The kicking game has never been high on their recruiting list. Home field advantage has never been the same since they out-lawed the cowbells in SEC play. Having wasted this much of your time, I took Auburn heavy at pick, and will buy back half if it goes above 3. I see this as being a close, hard fought game, with Auburn's kicking game being the advantage. Always appreciate your work.

Sorry. I left out one more thing that I wanted to say. As am I sure many of you know, Joe Lee calls his defensive signals from the sidelines without the help of a spotter or a headphone. In today's game this to be a disadvantage, because you CAN'T have as good of a view of how things are happening from the sidelines.

This is from an old "Dawg" with bad knees.

Auburn (2-1) at Mississippi State (1-1)

The Sports Network
DATE & TIME: Thursday, September 19th, 7:45 p.m. (et)
FACTS & STATS: Site: Davis Wade Stadium (52,884) -- Starkville, Mississippi. Television: ESPN. Home Record: Auburn 2-0, Mississippi St. 1-0. Away Record: Auburn 0-1, Mississippi St. 0-1. Neutral Record: Auburn 0-0, Mississippi St. 0-0. Conference Record: Auburn 1-0, Mississippi St. 0-0. Series Record: Auburn leads, 51-22-2.
GAME NOTES: The Mississippi State Bulldogs open SEC play against the Auburn Tigers in front of a national television audience on Thursday night. After dropping a 24-17 decision at USC in the opener, Auburn has posted convincing back-to-back victories over Western Carolina and Vanderbilt by an 81-6 combined score. The Tigers most recently recorded a 31-6 win over the Commodores, opening the SEC portion of their schedule on a positive note. Under head coach Tommy Tuberville, Auburn is 21-1 when scoring 20-or-more points. As for Mississippi State, it dropped a 36-13 decision to nationally- ranked Oregon in the season-opener. Fortunately, the Bulldogs bounced back strong with a 51-13 victory over Division I-AA Jacksonville this past weekend. This game is particularly important for Mississippi State because its next two games are on the road against LSU and South Carolina. Auburn holds a commanding 51-22-2 lead in the all-time series between these two teams, including 16-14 victory in last season's matchup.
Auburn running back Carnell Williams was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against Vanderbilt last Saturday. Williams scored two touchdowns and rushed for 170 yards on 20 carries against the Commodores, a major factor in the lopsided victory. In that game, Auburn racked up 378 yards of total offense and 19 first downs. The squad moved the chains on 6-of-11 third downs and committed just one turnover. Quarterback Daniel Cobb was not asked to win the game with his arm, but rather he was expected to provide balance to the ground attack. Cobb certainly came through for Tuberville's squad, completing 13-of-18 passes for 143 yards with no interceptions. Marcel Willis was the Tigers' most productive receiver, as he hauled in six passes for 66 yards. Overall this season, his 12 grabs are twice as many as his closest teammate. Williams has racked up 331 yards and five scores, and Cobb has completed 59 percent of his passes for an average of 137.7 yards an outing, giving the Tigers some balance on the offensive side of the ball.
While the Auburn defense was certainly not dominant in the victory over Vanderbilt, the fact that it only surrendered six points is due in large part to the fact that it forced four turnovers. Vandy was able to pound out 163 yards on 42 rushing attempts, and it netted 127 passing yards on 13-of-24 completions. Overall this season, the Auburn defense has been stingy. Opponents have managed an average of just 10 points and 312 yards of total offense per game against a Tiger unit that has already recorded nine takeaways. Against the run, they are yielding a mere 111 yards per outing on 3.2 yards per carry. While opposing quarterbacks have completed slightly more than 60 percent of their passes against Auburn, they have only thrown one touchdown against five interceptions. Mark Brown's 26 tackles currently top the team, while Karlos Dansby leads the way with 2.5 sacks. Dontarrious Thomas, one of the nation's finest inside linebackers, has yet to play a game this season due to injury.
While Jacksonville State is certainly not on par with the quality SEC opponents that Mississippi State will face this season, the play of the team in the blowout victory was certainly encouraging. The Bulldogs' 547 yards of total offense was the program's most since posting 548 yards against Northeast Louisiana in 1996. The Bulldogs are 59-16-1 (.783) under Jackie Sherrill when out-rushing their opponent and 12-41-1 (.232) when they don't. In the win, Mississippi State posted 175 yards on the ground as opposed to 120 for Jacksonville State. Quarterback Kevin Fant's 371 total offensive yards on Saturday was the fifth-highest total in school history and his 336 passing yards are sixth-highest. Fant's 89-yard touchdown strike to Ray Ray Bivines was also the longest pass play in school history. Considering that the Bulldog offense gained only 223 yards of total offense in the opener against Oregon, including a meager 31 yards on the ground, the breakout performance against Jacksonville State should restore some confidence.
In the week one loss to the Ducks, Mississippi State yielded 371 yards of total offense and 36 points. The squad allowed Oregon to hold the ball for over 35 minutes in what turned out to be a humbling outing. The results were reversed against the much less formidable Jacksonville State offense, as the Bulldogs surrendered just 248 yards of total offense in the tilt. They were equally impressive against the run and the pass, yielding 120 yards on the ground and 128 yards through the air. Mississippi State allowed Jacksonville State to invade the red zone just three times in the game, and what's even more impressive is that the defense surrendered points on just one of those occasions. Mario Haggan was sensational in the win for the Bulldogs, as he racked up 13 total tackles and forced a fumble.
Williams has five touchdowns this season, all on runs of 20-plus yards. Although Mississippi State will have the help of the home crowd, expect Auburn to come away with the victory. The Tiger defense has gone eight consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown, and the team has scored 42 of its 104 points off turnovers. While the Bulldogs will put up a fight, a home victory seems unlikely.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Auburn 30, Mississippi State 21

Fant-led Bulldogs enjoy big victory
By Todd Kelly
tkelly@clarionledger.com
STARKVILLE ? It wasn't quite the quick start Mississippi State quarterback Kevin Fant wanted for his first game of the season.
But even a perfectionist like Fant couldn't have complained too loudly about his play once those early butterflies disappeared.
Picking up where he left off in MSU's last two games of 2001, Fant passed for 336 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs pulled away from Jacksonville State 51-13 Saturday night before 47,456 at Scott Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 with the lopsided victory over their first Division I-AA foe since 1998. The Gamecocks, ranked 24th in I-AA, dropped to 1-1.
Major college opponent or not, Fant was just glad to be back on the field after serving a one-game suspension from the NCAA in MSU's season-opening loss to Oregon on Aug. 31.
Those first-game jitters? Fant twice misfired badly and was sacked for a 7-yard loss on the opening possession.
"I was just so excited to be back on the field with the rest of the guys," Fant said. "My adrenaline was really flowing. I was so pumped I just had to slow myself down."
Fant got untracked with a nifty 25-yard scramble that set up MSU's first score, a 5-yard run by Justin Griffith with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
State's passing game quickly followed suit.
After an 0-for-5 first quarter, Fant connected on 8 of 12 passes in the second period for 202 yards. That total included a pair of 50-yard completions to Grindle, including one for the senior split end's first touchdown catch since 2000.
"Kevin wanted to make a big play," Grindle said. "Once he settled down, that's when everything started to click."
Backup tailback Fred Reid scored on a 13-yard pass from Fant and a 3-yard run as the Bulldogs took a 32-13 lead into the lockerroom.
The margin would grow to 39-13 in the third quarter on yet another well-timed deep ball by Fant, this time for a school-record 89-yard touchdown pass to Ray Ray Bivines.
"I overthrew him, but he turned on the burners and went and got it," Fant said.
Fant led the Bulldogs on another touchdown drive in the fourth quarter before giving way to redshirt freshman Kyle York, who was the last-minute replacement at Oregon.
Fant's 336 passing yards were the sixth-most in MSU history ? and just 10 less than he produced in last year's season-finale against BYU.
Led by Grindle's three receptions for 118 yards, 11 Bulldogs caught passes against JSU.
"We've moved closer and closer to identifying the players who can make plays," Mississippi State coach Jackie Sherrill said. "We're getting to the point where we'll be able to do a lot of different things. We're getting better in a lot of areas."
One of those ? at least not in the first half Saturday ? was not defense, particularly against the run. Jacksonville State produced 180 yards of total offense in the first half, averaging better than five yards per carry.
"I didn't think we played well up front defensively," Sherrill said.
The Bulldogs won't have a lot of time to make adjustments. Auburn, 2-1, visits Scott Field on Thursday night for MSU's Southeastern Conference opener.
