I had an interesting idea the other day.

I am tracking plays in the Golf, Motor Racing, and Off The Wall Sections... as well as baseball.

Would it be possible to send and e-mail to a user when there has been an update to a forum? Or to notify a user by e-mail, cell phone or pager when there has been an update.
Or even a more specific message to say that Raymond has posted a play.. or that Stanley has his golf picks up?

I would be willing to pay twenty dollars a month for this service (maybe 50)

Surely this isn't an original idea.

And surely if you could figure out how to make this work you could make some money at it.

Right?

Clarification:

Just in case this wasn't obvious. I am asking if there is such a thing as software or a robot engine that would do automatic notifications.

The reason that I would be interested in this type of service is that I am tracking (following) plays made by overseas players. Stanley is in England, Anders is in New Zealand, Aussie Vamp and Cartman are in Australia, and djv is in Wisconsin.

These plays may be placed any time of the day and between my work week of 60 hours plus and my sleep time.. .damnnnn I'm missing plays!

I am not asking you to PERSONALLY notify ALL of us when there are updates to the forums.
Although ... I am "pretty" sure that you would, Mad Jack, if we asked you REAL nicely...AND paid you a lot of money!

Right??

Love this forum

Thanks

AzRusty

P.S. By the way.. I don't know what you did but you seemed to have gotten rid of all the nastiness that was creeping in here. Everyone has been kind and friendly and helpful. What did you use? Magic Dust or Weed Killer?

On the course!
There must be. Other forums have a box you can check so that you gat an email when someone responds to your post.

YYZ, even this forum has that

but i think what AZ is looking for is notification to a new thread, not a response to the thread he started.

Perhaps I'm missin' something, but Jack has always had the feature of the person checking the box if anyone replies to a thread he has started. It's at the bottom of the page.....

Rusty

You could start a new topic everyday with the words "Picks" and perhaps the date. If Fletch, Raymond, Jack, IE, DJ, etc..etc.. posted their picks in this thread that you started, then all of these selections would be sent to your email address if you selected that option...

AZ, it's only when you post a *new topic* that you have the option of being notified when someone responds........ right below the text area that you type your message in, there are 3 options of things that you can put a check in front of......if i'm not mistaken, it's the top one *E-MAIL NOTIFICATION*

the only way this will help you is if someone posts in response to your thread, not if someone just posts a new topic.... and say 20 people would like this notificataion....... the poster would have to post in a thread started by each one of them in order for this to work.

Thanks Bahama Mama

I wasn't thinking of just ME in posting this idea. I was thinking that it would be a useful tool for everyone.

The two best examples would be when the posts come up for the golf plays by Stanley or when he posts his tennis plays. Because of time differences he may post at two or three AM my time which I assume is sometime in the afternoon for him.

Obviously this would be less useful for baseball picks since people are posting like crazy all day long!

Thanks

AZ know what your saying. Here is what I do. Im sure you do to. But maybe you follow more then me. I will not mention names do not want to slight anyone. Football I do all my own, College/Pro. However I have three others here I follow. So I check back on just those three to see if they made any late adds. Might agree might not. Buckets im not big on so im a follower, and say so. Here again about three I follow. I guess what im saying is try not to watch to many. It is hard to do, and you may get confused. Do I do other sports. Yes and I do capp most but can not alays keep up. So I follow there also. This time differance thing I see how it can leave you behind. Not sure what you can do. One thing for sure if they are off shore in Asia or what ever. Stanley could email you. But if your in bed its no could anyway. I was going to keep this short. I tryed.

Thanks for the comments djv. That's exactly what I mean. I have been following plays, many of which are overseas. Australian football, rugby, golf (can be anywhere) but opinion comes from the UK.. Also the Nascar and F-1. Race times can be ...uh.. 3 AM???

You know what I mean.

As far as capping. I'm not there yet.

Ya'll have NO idea where I am coming from. I started this stuff at the beginning of baseball play-offs last year. Prior to that time I don't think that I had EVER watched a pro baseball OR football game all the way through without falling asleep or getting distracted and wandering off.. or starting to read a book.

My first wife was an avid Cowboy fan. We lived in Dallas when we first got married in '75 then moved to Houston. When the Cowboys played she rooted them on so LOUDLY that I had to go outside if I wanted to read or take a nap!

WHen I started this stuff my sports IQ was about that of a six year old. REALLY. I have been involved in the sciences and music my whole life. Played piano, guitar, trumpet, baritone and Sousaphone in high school.

My parents strongly discouraged my participation in sports and I was never particularly interested. Still am not other than the money making angle.
smile.gif
An avid sports fan I am not.

I was in the marching band in high school. Played trumpet at football games. Never undestood what all the excitement was about. Never knew what was what or who was who. Other than that a touch down was good if we got it. And bad if the other side did.
I usually read a paperback book during the games if the light was good enough.

Now after months of studying sports, listening to sports radio on the way to work and watching quite a few games.. college and pro.. all sports. I can proudly say that my sports IQ has risen to that of a not too bright twelve year old..... MAYBE

When I started doing this stuff I didn't even know what a point spread was, had never heard of a power play (hockey), wasn't real sure what an RBI was and didn't know that college basketball has two halves while pro basketball has four periods. Still don't know WHY!

I continue to study.. read sports illustrated.. it comes free to the office along with about 15 other magazines. I am still trying to get the basic concepts down. And feel that I am learning. I am following plays mostly but do THINK about what I am doing. If I don't like the odds.. or don't BUY the argument made as to why that game is a "pick" I lay off of it. I follow a very limited number of key players and I don't play all their plays... Raymond, Fletcher, and a very select few others including you, Neemer, Anders, Neemer.

There is great OPPORTUNITY in playing golf and the racing sports. I didn't even know that you could BET on golf until just a few months ago! REALLY

My post was longer than yours! Sorry

Az keep trying. Learn one good before you try more. Good reading at the home page here. Im sure you have done that. One step at a time. You need patients.

Speaking of needing patients.

Had a 72 year old lady come to me as a new patient Tuesday afternoon. She was all bent over, walked with a walker and spoke with a German accent.

The x-ray exam revealed severe osteoporosis (severely brittle bones...liable to break if I jumped on her too hard) and some old healed fractures of her pelvis. She also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (a debilatative auto-immune disease that destroys joints).

She told me her history and revealed that she has two artificial hips, a left artificial knee, replaced right wrist and replaced left shoulder (didn't know they could do that yet). Anyway... she was doing ok for the six years following the replacement of both hips..(they really look cool on x-ray... metallic ball with a long shaft of metal hammered down into the shaft of her femur OUCH) until she took a trip home to Frankfurt Germany and had to negotiate many steps. Being the tough, stubborn German that she is she didn't complain but just did the best that she could. Since returning home she has had terrible low back and left hip pain ... for the past year.

During the consultation she told me everything (I hope) relavant to her condition. I examined her and talked to her about what I thought that I could do for her.
After that .... she broke down in tears pleading for me to help.

"Help me doctor! You are my LAST hope."

I smiled...looked deeply into her eyes and thought to myself... Well....lady You really ARE screwed!

After my big smile.. I said.. "Well, now. Are you ready to go? Let's see if we can get you to feeling better!"

Further thoughts of what doctors really think when they are about to treat you! Stay tuned.

By the way... I was able to help her. But Geeeeeeeeeeeeezzzz. The repsonsibility!

My wife, Kathy who helps me in the office, jokes that all my "girlfriends" are 65-80 years old. Which is about right.

Later

AzRusty
