Round 1 plays (1pt):

Kenneth Ferrie to beat Pablo Martin -120 @ FiveDimes
Big difference in form between these two: Ferrie is coming off a top-10 finish last week (Martin missed the cut, 15 shots behind Ferrie) and in their nine common events since June, Ferrie has finished ahead of the Spaniard in seven of them. Even in terms of the 1st round, Ferrie has shot the lower score in seven of nine occasions. Playing in a home event may compensate partially for Martin, but he has not played on this course previously on Tour, whereas Ferrie performed solidly in his previous appearance in 2007.

Paul Broadhurst to beat Benn Barham -116 @ Extrabet [tie loses]
Not as profilic as he once was, but Broadhurst is still a player to back in certain markets when on the Iberian Peninsula. That is not the case with Barham who has missed nine of his last ten cuts in Spain and Portugal, including this event last year. With Broadhurst showing better form recently (bar the Austrian Open), he should start this event much better than his opponent.

Gary Murphy to beat Raul Quiros -115 @ FiveDimes
Huge gulf in class between these two players. Murphy has been an ever-present on the European Tour since 2003 and has two top-20 finishes in his last four events; Quiros' only European Tour card earned to date was on the 2001 Challenge Tour and while he finished 2nd in a European Qualifying Stage 1 event last month, he has a further two stages to complete to reach Murphy's level. Again, will playing in a home event lessen the gap between the two players? Not if course form is an indication: Murphy finished 31st on this course in the 2007 Open de Espana; Quiros missed the cut in a 2006 Challenge Tour event here.

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
A report that the course is shit, but the greens are very good . . . A recollection from two years ago (albeit in April) that the rough here was juicy and thus a premium on putting the ball in the fairway . . . I saw Luke Donald hit 1 shot and 2 putts last week (round 3 at Kingsbarns), but something seemed to suggest his putting stroke and confidence on the greens were at unusually high levels, and then I read a suggestion his putting has been all that . . . Retaining playing privileges, Ryder Cup points and the Race to Dubai giving some players some extra motivation . . . Spain has always been one of the European Tour locations where prior form or national connections have been more reliable indicators than for most nations . . . and as I noted last week, I'm wondering if any of "my loose ends" on the season are spurred on by feelings of some loose ends on their part . . . What to do, what to do . . .

Richie Ramsay(80/1) e.w.
- - " . . . he has promised to deliver a top-five finish in Madrid as a present for his girlfriend, who celebrates her birthday this weekend" . . . Never heard that one before . . . and "loose ends" from some reading in May that had me backing him in Italy when his season came to life with a 14th, and on my radar ever since.

Luke Donald(14/1) e.w.
- - Putting and driving.

Peter Lawrie(80/1) e.w.
- - Driving and putting and Spain.

Ignacio Garrido(60/1) e.w.
- - Loose ends on a pretty fair season, especially because of dramatically improved driving accuracy.

Carlos Del Moral(100/1) e.w.
- - Spain and playing privileges.
