Outright plays (1 pt):

Colin Montgomerie to win 14/1 e.w. @ Stan James, Victor Chandler, Paddy Power, BlueSq and UKBetting
Was a selection for the Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand three weeks ago and played well to finish in the top-15 after a poor opening round. His game is as good as it has been in the past couple of years and he does have a good record in this region. A shorter price than I would have liked, but this should represent one of hi best chances of victory this season.

Thongchai Jaidee to win 14/1 e.w. available generally
A much shorter price than I would have liked, but Jaidee is now common knowledge. He reinforced that by finishing 4th in the Johnnie Walker Classic last month and won the Myanmar Open by three shots last week. He also has good course experience, having finished 7th on this course in 2001, so it is difficult to see him not being in the thick of the action on Sunday.

Prayad Marksaeng to finish in the top-five 10/1 @ Paddy Power
Marksaeng missed the cut three years ago, but he had finished 14th and 9th in his appearances on this course beforehand so he does have useful course experience. He can also consider himself in good form, having finished in the top-10 in the Myanmar Open last week and finishing 2nd in the Thailand Open last month. Consistent rather than prolific, so the place-only option look the best format even in this rather weak field for a co-sanctioned event.

Matchup plays (1 pt):

Thongchai Jaidee to beat Soren Hansen -150 @ Bet365
Hansen did finish 4th in the Dunhill Championship in his last start four weeks ago, so he is capable of contending in any given week. But given that he had had only one other top-10 finish in any event since 2002, he is prime opposition material in matchups. Jaidee has finished in the top-10 in each of his last five starts, winning twice, so fully deserves these odds.

Colin Montgomerie to beat Soren Hansen -154 @ NordicBet
Monty can't display the same form as Jaidee, but his game has looked in much better shape this year and he does have a good record in this region - two wins in his last three Davidoff Tour events.

Paul McGinley to beat Robert Karlsson -111 @ Expekt
Opposing Karlsson who has played in this region only three times in the past half-dozen years, missing the cut twice, with his only weekend golf when finishing 27th on this course in 1999, when McGinley finished ahead of him on that occasion. Having missed five of his last ten cuts and playing in a climate he has either avoided or has struggled with, I don't see a full week of golf from the Swede. McGinley does have a proven record in this region and can boast finishes of 11th, 5th and 21st in his three visits to Saujana.

John Bickerton to beat Robert Karlsson -111 @ Centrebet [2pts]
Bickerton is another with a good record in this region, playing in this event in each of the last five years and finishing in the top-30 on both occasions that this course has been used. His finishes of 32nd, 32nd and 31st this year only highlight his suitability for matchups against struggling 2nd tier opponents.
(also available at BlueSq)

Lian-Wei Zhang to beat Robert Karlsson -115 @ Five Dimes [2pts]
Another with solid Davidoff Tour form, even though he spends most of his time on the Japan Tour now, is Lian-Wei Zhang. He finished 25th in the Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand (Karlsson missed the cut) and also finished well ahead of his opponent last week in the ANZ Championship. With top-5 finishes in three of his last seven events in Malaysia, Zhang should certainly be bettered prepared for this event than Karlsson.

OUTRIGHTS:

The matchups on this tour have been nicely profitable, but I don't think I've cashed an outright play . . . I wish they were sticking with last year's course that I know something about. But judging by what I've read and from other venues I've experienced in the region, I expect it will have elevation changes that are less than ideal for the best pieces of golf property; that this is a fair opportunity for some that are usually uncomfortable when in contention (either as a rule or because they have been lost in the wilderness for a while) because there will be a large mix of holes that present opportunities to attack without severe consequences and/or opportunities to bail out completely with a chicken-sh*t or a meltdown route; and that putting surfaces of the "love them or hate them" variety will produce a lot more of the latter attitude.

Lian-Wei Zhang(45/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ 5dimes

Joakim Haeggman(66/1) for 0.50 * e.w. @ Bet365

Prayad Marksaeng(55/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ 5dimes

Some e.w. doubles to spice things up covering ANZ & Nissan

Haeggman/N Price
Estes/Zhang
Randhawa/Parnevik
Jaidee/Weir
Srirot/Weir
Haeggman/Parnevik
Haeggman/DiMarco
Haeggman/Kelly
T Price/Haas
Jaidee/Slumen
Jaidee/Jobe
Randhawa/Maggert
Marksaeng/Choi
Weir/Wiratchant
Pitts/Parnevik

I tend to do these at fairly low values between .15 & .3 units e.w. This lot set me back about 5.25 units in total. Historically, I am up around 760 units since March 2001 on doubles/trebles, so it continues to be a worthwhile pursuit, though the past few months have not yielded very good results.

Curious to know if anyone else has a similar interest (I know a few of you do) and if they care to share any thoughts on how they construct a pair/treble combination.

Good luck!

lal2000,
I'm interested in how you actually match them up. I've noticed you scramble them all up. I normally just pick a few players per tourney and round robin them with another tourney. With your method I would be afraid I would leave someone out that was put into a different parlay.

I also normally take players with much shorter odds. I've hit a couple in the past few months including one pretty big bet but nothing really big. Seems to me like it would be so difficult to match a few of the 66-1 together but i'm sure it happens.

TU, you're right about the lower prices of course, but if I landed a shorter priced double it would win me little more than if I backed the players concerned individually.

For me, the point of doubles, which I dabble in occasionally is to set up a possible life changing bet!

My two this week are Sluman 125 and Dent 150....the double pays ?60k, which will do nicely!!

I have to agree with you Clive - "life changing" is the operative phrase here when playing doubles/trebles at these odds. Not wishing to jinx my current positions, I have Jaidee/Weir in a 168/1 possible double and more significantly, Weir and Wiratchant in a 1750/1 possible double. A few other possibilities are looming, but all manner of factors could intervene. Weir certainly looks on target to take the Nissan, but Malaysia remains something of a crap shoot.

Good luck to all.

lal GL on your double. Even though my fellow Canuck has a 5 shot lead I'm doing a rain dance for the both of us.
Interesting note: Weir has never won a tournament when leading after the 3rd round.

LHF - Now thats a stat I never knew and wish I didn't now - but if he blows a 5 stroke lead after 3 excellent rounds, I may never include him in a wager again!

Outrights - Final update: 2-1; +17.75pts

Montgomerie 16th
Jaidee 1st
Marksaeng 3rd

Quite an event! Jaidee was tied for the lead with three holes to play, but then had a hole-in-one and closed out for a two-shot victory, while Marksaeng had a good chance of victory until this stage and while he double-bogeyed the 15th, he still parred in for the top-five place. After a frustrating start to the year in the outrights, this was very satisfying!

Matchups - Final update: 3-1-1; +0.59pts

Jaidee/Hansen WON by 5
Montgomerie/Hansen WON by 8
McGinley/Karlsson WON by 1
Bickerton/Karlsson TIED (dead heat)
Zhang/Karlsson LOST by 8

Small profit on the event, which was very welcome as Karlsson did start the event very well and managed to finish 16th. Hansen missed the cut.

Davidoff Tour ytd
Matchups: 7-4; +2.87pts
Outrights: 3-3; +18.38pts

Thanks Clive - it always helps. And as I said in the Nissan thread, Stan and LIA contributed to it - I certainly owe them both a drink!
