layinwood,
Manheim auctions are the goverment auctions run by GSA.Go to their web site.It tells you what city and cars are available.I have one right next to my house in Newburgh,NY.They list all the cars and the day before you can inspect them.I bought my daughter a Dodge Stratus with 36,000 miles.I paid $5,200 for it.A teacher at my school bought the same year, make and model Stratus a month later .His buddy was a car salesman.Sold him the Dodge for $10,500 taking $2,000 off.He thought he was getting a great deal.He bought the car.His car had 39,000 miles on it.After seeing the teacher in the parking lot two months later we starting comparing our stories.I asked him to call his buddy and see if the dealer got his car from the GSA auction. He did and they did.Their cost was a few hundred dollars more then mine.Plus GSA has already prepped the car. These dealers buy these cars and mark them up almost double. You can get some great buys..most of the Stratus fleet are army, navy, air force recruiters cars....good luck...
ps....the teacher and his buddy ended their friendship over this.....he knew what his dealer paid for it..

Box, thanks for the info. I was unaware of the govt side of the Manheim auctions. I'm going to check out the one here in DFW when they have it.

There is another Manheim that only someone with a dealer license can go to but this one should work.

Marine, it's funny you posted that. I look at FW everyday and saw the thread but didn't read it.

I think I'm the perfect candidate to be looking at auctions. This is just for a fun car and I don't need it. If I find something good, if I don't then no big deal. I'm looking for another Land Rover so hopefully I can find one. I'm not a big mechanic but I like working on them and can typically fix anything that goes wrong with them. Right now I have nothing to work on, my car is under warranty and my wife won't let me touch her Jag.

Box, I really hate to correct you as you are one of my all time favorite posters. However, Manheim is not a branch of the GSA but rather a company who has been authorized to sell forfeited property for the US Marshall Service on a recurring basis, but only in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Tennessee (at least as far as I can tell).

http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/fed_prog/selerlst/selerlst.htm

I have designed literally dozens of auction facilities for Manheim over the course of my previous career and can unequivocally state that they are one of the most cutthroat organizations that I have ever had the displeasure to deal with and that is saying a lot.

Having said that, they are the world leader in automobile liquidations and have been in business since 1945.

Judge,I'm sure your right.I know the Manheim name and the auctions are GSA's.My next door neighbor works their driving cars during the auction.Another friend of mine owns the concession stand there selling to all the dealers bidding. There are auctions there almost everyday. But once a month the GSA[goverment cars are auctioned} are sold.I had a mechanic with me because you can't test drive the cars but can start it up.You can also do a carfax on it.I'm sure your right about shady deals.I always think their are people out there bidding on the cars to get the price up.
All I know is my daughter got 4 years out of that car and it was great.Thank's for the correction.I'll ask my neighbor who pays him.
