Kickserv, do you think Federer has any shot of stopping Nadal now at Wimbledon or the US Open. It seems nadal has elevated his game with his new hard court forehand so much, that he will not be challenged.

It really breaks my heart, because I am a huge fan of Roger, and to watch that Australian Open final and devastation he felt after the match was gut-wrenching.

I hope I'm wrong, but it just seems Federer has as many problems mentally with nadal as he does physically opposing him on the court. Just curious to get your opinion, since i know you're the tennis maestro.

Nadal's knees can give way anytimes; that's Fed's only hope to win.

Ok let us first start off with the fact that I am hardly a "tennis maestro". In fact when I played on tour I sucked, ok I was horrible:mj07:

Now that we got that outta the way.

Jedi Survivor:

You asked if Fed had any shot at Wimbledon. Ummm hell ya he does in fact I'd have him as a fave every time on grass. I don't care who Fed is playing he'll always be a fave on grass. And by the way some books do have him as a fave at Wimbledon and I agree with that. Let us keep in mind that the tour is a tad unfair when it comes to grass court tourneys. There are hardly any on the Futures and Challenger level and even fewer on the main tour. If there were as many grass court or carpet tourneys on tour Fed would be that much better. Don't forget that. Also keep in mind that the grass at Wimbledon is way slower then it was in the 90's way slower.

Ok let me sum it up like this:

Asking if Fed "has a chance" is well funny. In fact sometimes he'll be the fave when he faces Nadal and he should be the fave. That should answer your question about him "having a chance". Yes it is true that Nadal is extremely mentally tough. But both dudes have many years ahead of em. Be very interesting to see what transpires. These two are in top 3 of all time, yep that's right "all time". Tennis fans are very lucky to have these two guys playing in same era.

Oh and for what it worth......Fed is best all time on Grass and Nadal best all time on clay. There really is no debate on that. I know there are guys that were incredible on grass and clay (Pete, Muster, Brugerra, etc.) but the domination these two have on those surfaces really is remarkable:cool:

Thanks for your reply, kickserv! I agree with most of what you said. It really is not one bit debatable that Nadal is the best all time on clay, and before last year's Wimbledon Final I would have said there was no way you could debate that Fed is the best ever on grass. In fact, I felt prior to that match that Federer was the best player of all time, period.

That being said, I thought the way Nadal came off of that incredibly grueling semifinal match at the Australian that Roger should have dominated him. Instead, he came out and performed like Nadal has his number. I just think that like crow said, barring injury to Nadal (which could very easily happen the way he pounds his body), Federer will continue to lose to Nadal unless he can somehow get over the mental block he has when he faces him.

Its really a shame, because it is really like watching an artistic performance when Federer is at the top of his game; its a beautiful thing to behold. Unlike watching Nadal who acts like a gorilla out there with all the grunting and ass-picking.

I just pray that Federer overcomes the mental block somehow and starts turning this thing into a rivalry again. It would be nice if he could give Nadal a scare at the French Final, giving him some confidence back going into Wimbledon.

As far as top of the game is concerned, i'm afraid Fed's beginning to run on borrowed time ; he's pushing 28, has had a long injury layoff with a bad back, while Nadal and Murray are each improving dramatically at around 21/ 22.

Unless he can produce at Wimbledon or the US OPEN, he might not have many more chances to surpass Pete.

As a side note, the said Pete record of 14 slams isn't a real one in my eyes; Borg has 12 without ever playing in Australia and ending his career at 25.

Borg is bigger in my eyes.

Didn't Fed have all the advantages in the Aussie Open Final - surface and a clearly worn down Nadal and he just flat out choked, all of a sudden his serve % went way down. I think that's part of the reason for the emotions, he had a vulnerable Nadal and couldn't get it done.

Nadal is in his head......but Fed can get him out, that's all I am saying:SIB

Oh and crow.......the depth of men's tennis now compared to the days of Borg is night and day. Trust me when I tell you the depth in men's tennis is insane. Yes insane. The guys that played in the Borg era will tell you the same thing. The difference between number 50 and number 550 is pretty much nothing now. Not true back then. Although yes Borg did retire early can't discount that completely:SIB

The depth is much bigger now, of course.

But Fed enjoyed a free pass for many years as far as talent is concerned, with Nadal and Safin being the only threats.

Borg had to contend with Newcombe, Nastase, Connors, Mac enroe, Vilas , Lendl.

His Roland Garros - Wimbledon double 3 years in a row is still considered a near impossible feat to equal.

Fed had a lot of bad luck to meet Nadal...

Fed can get him out of his head? Mind explaining a lttle more because i'm a huge Fed fan and it looks to be getting worse and worse, like a slow death. First clay- (6-0 3rd set in 08), then grass, now Aussie hard court. I didn't see final set of 08 French but it was said that Fed folded, more or less just gave up. Hope your right .
