MLB Betting ? Marlins, Phillies Battle For East As Second Half Starts
Baseball has hit its All-Star Break and while most of the focus in sports is shifting to NFL week 1 odds and just betting NFL in general, we?ll get back to the day-to-day baseball betting on Thursday.
The second half of the season starts this Thursday with a lighter than usual schedule. Let?s take a look at the Philadelphia Phillies-Florida Marlins matchup:
Philadelphia Phillies @ Florida Marlins
Jamie Moyer vs Chris Volstad
The Philadelphia Phillies were the hottest team at the offshore sportsbook heading into the Mid Summer Classic, otherwise known as an All-Star Break. The Phillies have won nine of their last 10 games and have separated a little bit in the National League East after the Marlins crept back up.
The Phillies will send Jamie Moyer to the mound and I?m betting management is going to keep a close eye on his performance. The Phillies are close to signing Pedro Martinez and he might take up a spot in the rotation, which could put some heat on Moyer, who has struggled this year.
Moyer had another ugly start in his last outing, going five innings while giving up eight hits (two home runs) and six earned runs. His ERA has been hovering around five this whole season.
He?s actually pitched better away from home, which is a good sign for Thursday. On the road, his ERA is 5.08 while his home ERA is 6.80. Even so, opponents are batting .306 against him this year.
He?ll take on Chris Volstad, who has also been inconsistent this year.
Since June 1st, Volstad has had three starts where he?s allowed four or more earned runs ? including an eight-run outing on June 16th ? but he?s also had three starts where he?s allowed three runs or less.
In his last outing, Volstad pitched a complete game shutout while allowing just five hits and no walks against the San Francisco Giants. That shows what he?s capable of when he?s on his game.
The Phillies are the better team at this point but the Marlins have the better pitcher on the mound and they are at home. But the Phillies are a better team on the road, posting a 26-15 record away while just winning 22 of 45 games at home.
Look for the Phillies to win a shootout on Thursday.
