Welcome to Terps basketball. I will try to match the success I had last year in this thread predicting Maryland games.

This year's Maryland team is ranked #7 in the first AP rankings and is surrounded by a lot of hype. With Cowan and Smith staying the only real loss from last year's team is Fernandez so they return 7 of their 8 top scorers. They have added two very strong post/wing freshman players in Makhi Mitchell (6'10") and Dante Scott (6'8"). Both freshman have looked very good in practice and in the scrimmages. I expect Mitchell to be a starter by the time conference play rolls around. They definitely add a lot of depth to this team in the middle that they have lacked in the past. They also have Chol Marial coming back from surgery at the end of the month who is a total wild card. He is 7'2" with a 7'11" wing span and was once ranked as the top prospect in the country. He has had a lot of injury issues, but he is expected back by Dec. 1. He can play and could be a big factor in this teams success.

I have been most impressed with the transformation of last year's freshman class to this year. Jalen Smith, 6'10", who would have been a first round pick last year, has added at least 25 pounds since he came to Maryland and looks like a much stronger player. He has gone from Styx to Log! He is a special talent and could be a lottery pick this year. Last year I screamed almost every game that Wiggins should play more and he is going to be huge for them this year. I think he is a Kevin Huerter type player and will end up being a late first round draft pick. He just needs to assert himself more on the offensive end but he can score with the best in the league, and I expect him to have a huge year. Lindo is a guy that was in the rotation last year, but will be much better this year. He entered Maryland as a 17 year old and has now added about 30 lbs to his frame. He will be a solid rebounder for this year. Ayala is the one player who has lost weight and added quickness to his game. He has also greatly improved his shot. Serrell Smith will also add great guard depth to this team and will give them quality minutes. This is a great class and I expect all of them to be better this year.

Obviously that class is a huge part of this team, but lets not forget Darryl Morsell. He is one of the best defensive players in the county and just a solid overall player. He is the quiet leader of this team and plays well in big games.

Now here is the first wild card: Cowan. He gets a lot of hype but he also has had a lot of issues. He has to stop believing he has to score 20 a game for them to win and start distributing the ball without turning it over. He can be maddening to watch at times just like Melo Tremble was a few years ago. He had some terrible first halves last year and then had some fantastic second halves. He took over some games and then lost them some games by trying to do everything himself. He is not a great NBA player given his size but he is a very sold college player. His play will likely determine the overall success of this team. If he becomes a better distributor of the ball and turns it over less, Maryland is a final four contender.

Second wild card: Turgeon. I have been critical of him in the past especially as an offensive coach. His half court sets are terrible and his slowing down the game drives me nuts. He says they did not have the depth to run in the past, but this year will be different. I will believe it when I see it, but if he lets this team play much faster, they have the depth and versatility to wear teams out. He also has to sit Cowen when he is off. He refused to take him out of games last year and it cost them a couple wins. He is a great defensive coach and they should be a very strong defensive team once again. There is a lot of pressure on him this year. This team needs to meet expectations for him to quiet the critics.

Overall this Maryland team has the pieces to challenge for a conference title and make a strong run in the NCAA tournament. They are a very long, athletic, deep and versatile team that will create a lot of match up problems for opponents. If Cowan can distribute and Turgeon lets them play, they are a contender for the Final Four.

Game 1: Holy Cross +25.5/141

First game is always a crap shoot. The total has already moved up 5 points from the opening line. I am wary of the total because Holy Cross only averaged 67 points a game last year and lost 3 of their 4 top scorers. The spread will be decided by pace. If Holy Cross can slow the game down they can cover, but if the game speeds up they could get blown out. If this were last year, a FH Under or Holy Cross+ FH would be in order, but I think we may see a different Maryland team to start the season. Maryland's depth also gives them an advantage towards covering the number at the end of the game. I am passing on this game as it is just too hard to predict the first game of the season for both teams, but if I were forced to make a decision I would lay the 25.5.

Game 2 - Rhode Island 11.5/144.5

Maryland got an easy win against an undermanned Holy Cross team despite the fact that they were terrible from beyond the arc. They were 5 or 27 for the game and Ayala and Wiggins were 1-12. They still scored 95 points and looked like they are going to push the pace more for the year. Morsell gave them a huge boost off the bench and will get the start tonight since RI is not a big team. The freshman played well with Scott having the strongest game. Cowen definitely focused more on running the offense than shooting the ball which is a very good sign. They should get more of a test tonight against RI. Maryland biggest advantage is in overall size. They have a size advantage at every position. RI's best player is 6'8'' and is a strong post player but MD has the bodies to through at him.

Maryland has 3 big recruits coming to this game (two four stars and one five star) and it is a 9:00 FS1 game so it is a bit of a showcase for them tonight. I think they get off to a fast start and play even faster with the smaller starting line up. They also have to shoot better from 3 than they did in the first game and I think Wiggins will bounce back tonight.

MD FH Ov 67.5

is how I am playing this game. I may have a second half play based on the FH, but I think MD will be a higher scoring team than they were last year and it will take a few games for the lines to catch up. I think they will cover the 11.5 for the game but the FH play looks stronger.

Thanks Keith.

Losing by a half just sucks, especially when so many points were given away. That looked like the Maryland of last year. Slow start, tons of turnover, bad shooting and Cowan was completely invisible. Their offensive execution was just terrible. They turned it on towards the end but the bad start was a killer. Just taking the small loss, like the Terps but not playing the second half. Great day in football, so not giving any more away.

Game 3: Oakland -20 140.5

Only two games in, but Maryland really has not put it together yet. Now they are on a week long layoff and get and Oakland team at home that should compete. They can match Maryland's size and could give them some trouble in the paint. I doubt they can hang with Maryland for the whole 40 though and the line seems about right. So, one more try

Maryland Ov 140 -120

on the over. Still not convinced Maryland can start the game fast, especially given the lay off and an early tip-off, but I really do not know enough about Oakland to trust a first half bet. Oakland has been turnover prone in its first 3 games and that should create a lot of transition baskets for the more athletic Terps, so I will take my shot with the over for the game.

Bason--our total dropped from 140 to 136.5 in the blink of an eye. Uh-oh :scared

Yeah, looks like a bad call. I will try to do write ups but I am not betting until they play some decent teams. Hard to cap when you know so little about the other team. Oakland can not handle MD's defense and is shooting like a bad high school team.

George Mason +18

I will try to write more on this later, but Mason can be a tough team to play. They have balanced scoring and play defense. Best team Maryland has played so far. Should be a more defensive game which should make it a closer game than people think.

Been traveling so no time to post, but the old Maryland is back. They continue to get off to slow starts and then turn it on in the second half (and the overs). I think they may run into some trouble with that scenario today against a team that can really score. We will see how good their defense is, but they were losing at the half to Temple and Harvard so I will go with the trend:

Marquette +1.5 FH

If the FH is not very high scoring, I will be on the second half over as the first two games went way over in the second half.

Nice call. Amazing that they can cover yesterday but not against Temple and Harvard when I had them.

The slow starts killed them in those games. They really did not play that well in the FH yesterday either, but Marquette was just terrible. I expect the slow starts are going to continue. They always play great defense, but they rarely put a great offensive game together. The freshmen need to get better. The SH overs have been money so far and may be the play to stick with unless the FH is very high scoring.

Maryland vs Notre Dame

Maryland is playing well coming off a dominate game against Marquette and now ranked #3 in the country which puts some pressure on them coming into this national TV game. On paper though it looks like Maryland really matches up well against ND. Notre Dame is led by John Mooney who leads the team in scoring and rebounding, and as a team, they take care of the ball. Maryland will use multiple match ups (mostly Smith and Morsell) on Mooney and I think it will be effective. Maryland's defense is their biggest strength and should propel them to the win tonight as ND only shoots 42% from the floor and 32% from three. If ND was a better shooting team I would take them in the FH, as I expect MD's slow starts to continue, but they are not a team you can trust to score against a strong defense. Cowan is playing great now and I think the team is feeding off of his strong play right now. I still think the freshman need to get better so they can improve the team's play in the post, but Notre Dame is not a strong post team, so the play is:

Maryland -8.5 -120

I don't usually lay this many points with Maryland, but I think they will wear ND out over the full 40 minutes. If the game is low scoring in the FH, I will be on the SH over as it has been money in MD games lately.

Fun Stats: The last time Maryland was 8-0 in 2006 they lost the 9th game to Notre Dame. The last 4 times Maryland has been ranked in the top 10 and played ND they lost every game dating back to 1976.

Obviously I take no stock in these numbers!

Well, that was a typical MD first half. Played liked shit for 15 minutes on offense and then play great the last 5. ND is not very good and it was good to lay off them in the half. They can not do much against the Maryland defense. I think the bet looks good as I expect MD to play better in the second half, so I will get a little greedy:
