I saw your post earlier about your English Mastiff puppy. I have an 18-month old, 200 lb fawn pure-bred English mastiff. My wife is also a veterinarian. If you have any questions, get my e-mail from Jack or post them here. Great dogs. Like to chew (wood esp) and snore. Lots of drool so buy some cheap cloth towels at K-Mart or Wal-Mart and station them through the house. Their drool oxidizes on white or beige carpet and turns black - clean it up asap. Have his hips X-rayed early to look for potential displasia. I would start on glucosamine tablets now to ward it off. If you are having him or her fixed, look into tacking their stomach to their abdominal wall. In large breeds, a common cause of death is stomach torsion where the stomach twists and they colic like a horse. When the vet is in there fixing your dog, it isn't much to tack the stomach so this can't happen.

Good luck.

njsf:
He is truly a good dog. Mastiffs have their quirks just like any other breed. I've owned Labs all my life. My wife surprised me with the mastiff as a Father's Day gift. Very loyal and protective, great with kids - my kids ride him around the house. Very good temperment and everyone in the neighborhood loves him. He's worth the work we put into him but that is probably true of any dog.
