i thought for sure it was 2
i thought you always do parentheses first

A common technique for remembering the order of operations is the abbreviation "PEMDAS", which is turned into the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction".

Yes, you do the parenthesis first, but the answer is 14.

(3x6) + 12 ? 3 - 8 =

18 + 12 ? 3 - 8= Then do the division:

18 + 4 - 8= Now add and subtract left to right:

22 - 8=

14

Penguinfan (and others) seem to be correct, I like how Penguinfan showed how it was calculated.

The answer is important, it is for a 500 dollar gift card, I won a contest and I need to answer the "skill testing question" in order to claim the prize.

If I get the answer wrong, I am fucked out of 500 bucks. At first I thought it was 2, then I thought it was 14, I am now 95 percent sure the answer is 14.

That's totally off Penn-makes no sense modern math or not--grand daughter is right --2:0003

I'd like to hear why you think I'm wrong (which I'm willing to be). I think I am correct. Order of operation does not care about left to right, it only cares about order of operation.

In this case that order would be to do the parenthesis first and come up with 18 for the (6x3). You then do multiplication and division (in this case you do work from left to right). In this case you get 4 for the 12 ? 3.

You can then do addition and subtraction left to right.

In order to get 2 for an answer you have to do the parenthesis first and then do everything left to right, which is incorrect according to order of operations.

Again, I'd like to know why you think this isn't correct.
