I am leaving my job in academic medicine (I am a doctor) and going to go into private practice. I have been offered 3 jobs in the area of the country where my wife wants to live. The question is this: one of the jobs that I am considering (and probably like the best overall, but only slightly) is to join someone already in private practice with the option to buy into the practice in two years if all goes well. The hitch is this, the person I am considering joining does not want to outline the specifics of the partnership. I realize that a specific dollar figure is generally considered unreasonable for this, but my impression that it is reasonable to expect a formula to be agreed upon beforehand (i.e. 50% of the accounts receivable, etc, etc...or whatever we agree on). This seems to make sense to me so that after two years the person doesn't come up with some crazy figure, that would then have affected my initial decision. I am seriously considering rejecting the offer based on this, but want to see if I am crazy or not to expect this. My lawyer is out of town for the week (and only been marginally helpful with this aspect anyway) and I need to make some decisions. Any thoughts guys. Anyone have any experience with medical partnerships.

my 2 cents....definitely get what you want in writing before joining the group...you have other options, so you have more flexibility

congrats and gl in the venture
