Hi Guys,
I am not sure how much coverage (if any) the Melbourne Cup gets in the US but it is easily the biggest sporting event on the Australian calender. Here are some quick thoughts on the race for anyone having a bet.
As always it is a huge field (23 horses) and most of the field has some claims. I have narrowed it down the following in order of preference:
#13 Ethereal 8-1
#19 Maythehorsebewithu 14-1
#2 Sky Heights 7-1
#14 Hill of Grace 16-1
#23 Rum 20-1
#22 Rain Gauge 9-1
#16 Big Pat 11-1
Ethereal won the Caulfield Cup and history shows this is the best form for the Melbourne Cup. Some are querying whether she will run 3200m but I believe she will run it out very strongly. Mares are starting to build a decent record in the Melbourne Cup (3 winners from the past 13 years) and she gets in well with only 52kg.
Maythehorsebewithu is in a very similar position to last years winner Brew. He is trained by Mike Moroney and had to win the Saab Quality race on Saturday to qualify for the Melbourne Cup. He won that race quite impressively and now only has to carry 50kg. This horse is an absolute stayer and should be right in the finish.
Sky Heights is the class horse in the race with almost $4 million in prize money and will be ridden by top jockey Damien Oliver. A very close 2nd in the Caulfield Cup and seems back to his best after some mixed form last season. Disregard his failure in the 1999 Melbourne were he struck horrible interference. If it keeps raining then Sky Heights chances will keep improving and he will probably start favourite.
At this stage my bets will be as follows:
EACH WAY
#13 Ethereal
#19 Maythehorsebewithu
TRIFECTA
1st #2 #13 #19
2nd #2 #13 #19
3rd #2 #13 #14 #16 #19 #22 #23
The track has just been downgraded from GOOD to DEAD in the last few minutes.
Good luck to all.
